THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18, 2015 SPORTS Jeter, Matsui arrive in Japan for charity baseball game TOKYO (AP) — Former major league teammates Derek Jeter and Hideki Mat- sui will take part in a chari- ty baseball game to support survivors of the 2011 earth- quake and tsunami in Japan — and Jeter repeated a de- sire to own a team someday. Participating in the game at Tokyo Dome Sun- day will be a group of stu- dent baseball players from the Tohoku region that was devastated by the 2011 di- saster that killed more than 15,000 people. Profits will go toward helping children in the region. Jeter and Matsui will also put on a baseball clinic and take part in a home run der- by. On Saturday, the pair will throw out the ceremoni- al first pitches at a preseason exhibition at Tokyo Dome between Matsui’s old club, the Yomiuri Giants, and the Nippon Ham Fighters. Jeter, who retired from Major League Baseball last year after 20 years, said he’s looking forward to a break from the game and reiter- ated a desire to become an owner. “I need to get away from (baseball) for a little while, I’ve been doing it profes- sionally for 23 years,” Jeter said. “At this moment, I’m not thinking about getting back in the game. My ul- timate dream is to one day own a team, but that’s in the future.” Recalling his own ex- periences after the Sept. Jeter is teaming up with Matsui to support the survivors of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami — and hinted he may someday get back into baseball as a team owner. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York, Jeter said he was hoping to help chil- dren in Japan who are still dealing with the aftermath of the disaster. While the earthquake and tsunami struck four years ago, many of the participants from the area are still coping with the loss of family and friends and living in tem- porary housing. “The kids will never for- get what happened,” Jeter said. “But if they can come out and have fun and en- joy themselves through the sport of baseball, that’s what we’re trying to do here.” Matsui, the 2009 World Series Most Valuable Player, said Jeter’s presence will go a long way. “Having Jeter here is a wonderful thing,” Matsui said. “I’m happy, and the kids taking part in this event will be thrilled. We hope they have a great time, and return to Tohoku with some great memories.” Matsui was recently re- hired by the New York Yan- kees as a special adviser to general manager Brian Cashman, and Jeter said his former teammate will have much to offer. “Not only was he suc- cessful here in Japan, one of the biggest stars in the coun- try, he came over the United States and did the exact same thing,” Jeter said. “There ar- en’t too many players that can say that ... so he has a lot of knowledge, and will be able to share that with as many people as he wants to do.” Iwakuma sharp as Mariners and White Sox tie GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Hisashi Iwakuma threw four scoreless innings and the Seattle Mariners and Chicago White Sox played to a 5-5 tie Tuesday. Iwakuma, the Mariners’ No. 2 starter, DOORZHG¿YHKLWVZKLOHVWULNLQJRXWWZR “I’m not 100 percent there yet, but I feel like I’m close to getting there,” Iwa- kuma said through a translator. “I’m in game mode now. It will pick up another notch.” Jeff Samardzija, the White Sox’s likely opening day starter with Chris Sale side- lined, allowed two runs and four hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out three. The White Sox, trailing 5-2 in the eighth, scored three to tie it, Trayce Thompson hit a two-run homer off Rafael Perez. “He’s got a ton of talent,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of Thomp- son, brother of the Golden State Warriors Klay Thompson. But he said Thompson sometimes puts “a lot of pressure on him- self.” “He should just go out and play with FRQ¿GHQFHWKDWKHVKRXOGKDYH+HFDQGR HYHU\WKLQJRQWKH¿HOG´9HQWXUDVDLG Logan Morrison hit a full-count pitch from Samardzija in the fourth over the ULJKW¿HOGIHQFHWRVWDUWWKHVFRULQJ Robinson Cano singled in a run for the Mariners.
