AAUW honors Women’s History Month
Learn about local women and their contributions to Astoria
ASTORIA — To celebrate
March as Women’s His-
tory Month, the American
Association of University
Women invites the public to
hear stories contained in the
booklet “100 Women Who
Helped Make Astoria” at 7
p.m. Tuesday, March 17 in
the Flag Room of the Asto-
ria Public Library, located at
450 10th St.
In the 1980s, there was
virtually nothing written
about women in schools’
history books. To reme-
dy this omission, Astoria’s
AAUW branch contributed
books and posters on women
to schools. Special dinners
and receptions, bringing
women and women’s groups
together, were organized to
discuss the wealth of variety
and strengths about women
in the community. A com-
mittee was formed, param-
eters were determined, eras
and names were researched.
This booklet began with the
idea of acknowledging the
contributions women have
made and continue to make
to Astoria. Two years were
devoted to the booklet, “100
Women Who Helped Make
Astoria,” for presentation
during Astoria’s bicentenni-
al year, 2011.
Over the past two years
AAUW has had the plea-
sure of hearing how eight
women have helped Astoria:
Rae Goforth, Karen Mel-
lin, Susan Skinner, Barbara
Roberts, Anita Schacher,
Arline LaMear, Edith Hen-
ningsgaard Miller and Gerry
Swenson. The recordings of
these women have been add-
ed to AAUW’s archive of
“100 Women Who Helped
Make Astoria” to acknowl-
edge their impact on the
community.
AAUW would once again
like to recognize more of the
100 women honorees. This
year, hear Janet Weidman
will share her story as well
as others, and learn more
about what makes women
involve themselves in their
communities.

Keith Clark, the artistic director of the Astoria Music
Festival, says the festival is known for doing unusual
things well: such as putting on its first March Mini-Se-
ries this month.
