Lady Gulls: Perfect and getting better
Knappa boys can clinch
league title Friday

SEASIDE — Seaside’s
Maddi Utti, Sydney Villegas
and Whitney Westerholm
combined for 35 points, and
that was more than enough
as Seaside all but clinched
another Cowapa League girls
basketball title with a 54-25
win over Banks Tuesday.
The Lady Gulls (7-0 in
league play) have a safe two-
game lead in the standings
with three games remaining.
Seaside can of¿cially clinch
the league championship with
a victory over Valley Catholic
Friday.
For now, no one has even
come close to challenging the
Gulls, who topped Banks —
the Cowapa’s second-place
team — by 29 points.
Despite going 8-for-29
from the ¿eld in the ¿rst half,
Seaside had things well in
hand midway through the sec-
ond quarter, leading 18-4 fol-
lowing a three-point play by
Paige Ideue.
After a rough ¿rst half,
Westerholm drained three
3-pointers in the third quarter,
with a 12-0 run by Gulls re-
sulting in a 50-19 lead.
Westerholm led the Gulls
with 13 points (11 in the
third quarter), while Utti had
12 points and eight assists,
and Villegas ¿nished with 10
points. Haylee Dundas added
nine points, eight rebounds,
four steals and four assists.
It was a “great defensive
effort by our girls tonight,”
said Seaside coach Wally
Hamer. “The coaching staff
felt great about what the girls
accomplished.
“Whitney Westerholm lit
it up in the third quarter,” he
said. “The third quarter was
a pivotal quarter. Unsung
heroes tonight were Britta-
ny West, Allison Bussert and
Paige Ideue. They rebound-
ed and chipped in points as
well.”
Astoria 35, Tillamook 32
TILLAMOOK — The
Astoria girls basketball team
scored its second three-point
win over Tillamook in less
than a month, as the Lady
Fishermen won on the road
Tuesday, 35-32.
Chloee Hunt scored 15
points and pulled down nine
rebounds for Astoria, which
defeated Tillamook 36-33 Jan.
23.
After a 7-7 tie in the ¿rst
quarter, the Lady Fish out-
scored the Cheesemakers 11-5
in a decisive second quarter.
Freshman Kaylee Mitchell
added nine points and six re-
bounds, and sophomore Alex-
is Wallace ¿nished with four
points and nine rebounds.
Rainier 64, Warrenton 17
RAINIER — Rainier
jumped out to a 28-7 halftime
lead, on its way to a 64-17 win
over Warrenton Tuesday night
in a Lewis & Clark League
girls basketball game.
Landree Miethe scored 10
points for the Warriors, but
it wasn’t enough to match
Rainier’s Shelby Saylors (14
points), Aspen Norman (12)
and Julia Taylor (10), as 10
different Columbians reached
the scoring column.
Knappa 56,
City Christian 42
KNAPPA — Knappa
pulled to within one game
of third place in the league
standings Tuesday night, with
a 56-42 Northwest League
girls basketball win over City
Christian on Senior Night at
Knappa.
Shailei Wright scored 17
points, to go with four re-
bounds, three steals and two
assists for the Lady Loggers,
who led from start to ¿nish.
Knappa improves to 6-5 in
league play, while City Chris-
tian drops to 7-4. The Loggers
¿nish the regular season Friday
at Neah-Kah-Nie (3-8), while
City takes on Faith Bible (9-2).
Kacie Cameron added
11 points for Knappa, which
scored 19 points in both the
third and fourth quarters.
Kaitlyn Landwehr chipped
in eight points, with 10 re-
bounds and three assists, and
Chloe Little ¿nished with eight
points, four steals and ¿ve re-
bounds.
Ilwaco 61, Toledo 44
ILWACO, Wash. — Ilwaco
opened the Southwest Wash-
ington 2B District girls basket-
ball tournament with a 61-44
win over Toledo Monday.
Hannah Ellsworth scored
18 points to lead the Lady
Fishermen (20-1 overall), who
outscored the Indians 25-6 in
the ¿rst quarter.
Jasmine Cof¿n added 17
points and Makenzie Kaech
chipped in 15 for Ilwaco,
which will play Adna Saturday
(time and place to be deter-
mined). Toledo (5-16 overall)
advances to play Tacoma Bap-
tist Wednesday.
Naselle 59,
Washington School for the
Deaf 22
NASELLE, Wash. —
Naselle had 22 points after
one quarter, and Washington
School for the Deaf had just
22 for the entire game, as the
Comets won a Southwest 1B
District Tournament game, 59-
22, Monday in Naselle.
Kendra Leelend had 10
points, 12 rebounds and six
assists for Naselle, which had
21 steals.
Tayler Ford led the Com-
ets with 14 points, as Naselle
advances to face either Lake
Quinault or Columbia Adven-
tist Saturday.

Tillamook 41, Astoria 40
TILLAMOOK — Astoria
had the lead for most of the
fourth quarter Tuesday night at
Tillamook, but could not quite
close it out, as the Cheesemak-
ers rallied for a 41-40 Cowapa
League boys basketball win.

After Tillamook scored to
take the lead with less than a
minute to play, Astoria was un-
able to get off an attempt at a
game-winner.
Morgan Fruiht led the Fish-
ermen with 17 points, followed
by Kyle Strange with 13.
Seaside 63, Banks 53
SEASIDE — It was close
through three quarters, but
Seaside’s Jackson Januik
turned a three-point lead into a
late runaway win for the Gulls
Tuesday night, 63-53 over
Banks.
Januik scored 14 of his
game-high 18 points in the ¿-
nal period, as Seaside reeled
off a 13-2 run in the fourth to
put away the Braves.
Banks was within 43-40
to start the fourth quarter,
when Zach Marston convert-
ed a three-point play, which
sparked the Gulls to a 20-point
quarter.
Most of the scoring came
from the free throw line, where
Seaside was 10-of-15 in the
fourth quarter, 18-of-28 for
the game to 11-of-13 for the
Braves.

ing quarter, on his way to 17
points.

Knappa’s four seniors
combined to score 56 points,
and the Loggers had all the
points they would need by
halftime, leading 44-15.
Burnard led the way with
24 points, with Miller add-
ing 20. Justin Dragoo pulled
down 12 rebounds with eight
points, and the Loggers con-
nected on 9-of-25 3-point-
ers.
Three Rivers Christian 65,
Naselle 24
KELSO, Wash. — Karsten
Rentner scored 12 points to
lead Three Rivers Christian to
a 65-24 win over Naselle Tues-
day, in a Southwest 1B District
Tournament playoff game in
Kelso.
Adrian Corona scored eight
points to lead the Comets, who
¿nish the season 3-17 overall.

day night, as the Columbians
rallied for a 42-39 win over
Warrenton in Lewis & Clark
