include:
1979: Students help place the new in-
formation booth at the Astoria Column.
1986: Cement masonry students make
and install cement garbage receptacles
throughout downtown Astoria, working
with the Astoria Downtown Develop-
ment Association.
1988:Landscaping students transform
empty lot into a landscaped yard at
Olney School.
1989: Cement masonry students pour
concrete for East Portal Park project.
Students’ contributions to the community take two forms:
• Career Technical Service Training: Students practice skills
they are learning in their trade classes as well as learn new
ones while providing labor for non profit or governmental
agenciesʼ community projects
• Community Service (volunteerism): Students volunteer in
the community.
• In addition, TPJCC actively contributes to most Clatsop
County non profitsʼ fundraising events and auctions.
During Program Year 2013/14 7094 hours were recorded for
community contributions. Per www.independentsector.org the
average worth of a volunteer hour is $22.55 – making Tongue
Point Job Corps Centerʼs community contribution worth
$159,970.
1989: Cement masonry students con-
struct sidewalks, wheel chair ramp and
install railings for Clatsop Care Center.
1991:Students assist with renovation of
Shively Hall.
1992: Cement masonry, plastering,
electrical, carpentry and painting stu-
dents install new restrooms in the John
Jacob Astor Theater for the Astor Street
Opry Company.
1993: Cement masonry, plastering,
electrical, carpentry and painting stu-
dents complete a second restoration
phase at the John Jacob Astor Theater
for the Astor Street Opry Company.
1994: Landscaping students assist
ADHDA with downtown beautification
projects.
1995: Cement masonry students pour
sidewalk for the Seaside Youth Center.
1995: Landscaping students install irri-
gation system and landscaping at Asto-
ria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce
building.
1995: Welding students construct steel
battering rams and target holders for the
Astoria Police Department firing range.
1996: Mayor Willis Van Dusen says:
“The Tongue Point Job Corps has done
more for the city of Astoria on public
works projects than anyone except the
taxpayers.”
1996: Landscaping students help re-es-
tablish the Regatta Rose Garden at the
Flavel House Museum.
1998: Students assist the city of Astoria
with filling and delivering sandbags for
possible flooding.
1999: Carpentry and cement masonry
students help build Seltzer Park in Sea-
side.
1999: Culinary students help prepare
food for the fundraiser to purchase the
Astoria trolley.
2001: Repaired community
showers/bathrooms.
2003: Carpentry students build rabbit
hutches for county fairgrounds.
2003: Painting students paint interior of
Senior Center.
2003: Painting students paint the exte-
rior of the Warrenton Library.
2005: Students remove old bridge; fabri-
cate foot bridge stanshions; clear trail;
place bark and sandfill; electrical repairs
at Camp Kiwanilong for Rotary.
2005: Landscaping students relocate
200 shrubs from the Heritage Museum
to Flavel House.
1995: Carpentry and cement masonry
students build a patio and refuse shed
at Pioneer House.
2005: Cement masonry students pour
sidewalk at Clatsop Retirement Village.
1995: Painting students paint the
reconstructed US Customhouse.
2005: Painting students prep, prime,
paint and finish coated exterior
restoration of Liberty Theater.
1995: Plastering students construct
concrete trash receptacles for the city
of Clatskanie.

creeks for the North Coast Land Con-
servancy.
2008: Painting students paint interior
of new location of Astor Street Opry
Company.
2009: Cement masonry and landscap-
ing students do dugout expansion and
upgrades at ball field.
2009: Facilities maintenance students
power wash Senior Center exterior
which is then painted by painting stu-
dents.
2009: Plastering students refurbish
and plaster walls in AWACC Green
building.
2009: Cement masonry students grav-
elled new dog park for Warrenton.
2010: Glazing students construct and
install new windows for Senior Center.
2010: Students help construct new play
equipment to improve Seasideʼs Broad-
way Park.
2011-13: Landscaping, welding, glazing
and cement masonary students com-
plete cityʼs projects for Astoria Down-
town Beautification.
2013: Facilities Maintenance students
assemble bleachers for Seasideʼs im-
proved Broadway Park field.
2013: Culinary students assist with
food preparation for the Astoria
Trolleyʼs 10th anniversary party.
