The name “Tongue Point” was given by
Lieutenant William Broughton of the
George Vancouver Expedition.
Columbia Defense League formed and
demands that base be developed or
property be remanded to Clatsop County.
President Kennedy tours Tongue Point
vowing to save the facility from the
wrecking ball.

Lewis and Clark call the peninsula east of
Astoria Point William, after William Clark.
Groundbreaking for Tongue Point Naval
Air Station.
US Coast Guard establishes base.
1919
1940
$1.5M federal appropriation to build Navy
base at Tongue Point.
Navy moves onto base as WWII is
imminent.
President Johnson signs the Economic
Opportunity Act which creates Job Corps.
1921
1943-44
Clatsop County transfers ownership of
395 acres at Tongue Point to the federal
government.
Facilities were used to assist the Kaiser
Company in a critical shipbuilding
program.

1946
Navy announces plan to establish subma-
rine and destroyer base and begins
dredging.
Eight concrete finger piers built to provide
moorage for the Columbia River Group of
the Pacific. Reserve Fleet was built to
house mothballed Liberty ships. Care-
taker status.
1924
Construction completed,with a breakwater
& four wooden finger piers.
1924-39
Base lies unused - popular picnic area
and swimming hole.

Tongue Point chosen to be a Job Corps
center. U of O holds contract to administer.
1965
First corpsmen arrive at TPJCC which
opens as all male center on Feb. 2, 1965
1966
TPJCC is Festival Central for the week-
long visit by officials from Astoriaʼs Sister
City, Walldorf.
1961
1967
Tongue Point Naval base declared ex-
cess by federal government and trans-
ferred to the General Services
Administration.
