I know that many people
currently living in Clatsop
County were around when
Job Corps opened at the
former Tongue Point Naval
Station in 1965. Many may
remember challenging times
as Astorians got used to a
diverse population and
youth from all around the
country acclimated to the
North Coastʼs weather, food
and customs. Many of you
reached out to help these
ʻstrangersʼ feel welcomed and more comfortable in their
new surroundings.
Much has changed in the world, in Job Corps, in Clat-
sop County and at Tongue Point during these past fifty
years. More than 30,000 young adults have received train-
ing at Tongue Point Job Corps Center, paid for through our
taxes. While most graduates have remained in the Pacific
Northwest, many have returned to their home cities around
the nation and many have travelled around the world.
They have shared their impressions of Job Corps, Clatsop
County and Tongue Point.
I want to thank everyone – elected officials who have
provided public encouragement and appreciation, employ-
ers who have partnered in training students, residents who
have volunteered as mentors and tutors or opened their
homes to host students for holidays, and so many others -
who have had a hand in supporting Tongue Point Job
Corps Centerʼs staff and students. You can take credit for
so many successful people throughout the country – with
ages ranging from sixteen up through seventy-one!
And, as you look around Clatsop County you can see
so many contributions that Job Corps students have left
behind in our community.
Little did Sargent Shriver know that his idea - Job Corps
- would turn out to be such an invaluable asset for our
country. We in Clatsop County are lucky to have one of
the premier centers in a program which some call our
countryʼs best kept secret and many others profess is the
best use of their tax dollars – because Job Corps Works!
