“Oregon is known for innovative col-
laborations. And to keep good family
wage jobs in Oregon - companies need a
supply of highly skilled and trained workers
— and thatʼs where this kind of collabora-
tion between the Tongue Point Job
Corps, students, and industry is going to
pay dividends for everybody involved. Itʼs
well documented that students do better
when they see how the things theyʼre
learning in school directly relate to a
career path. This program does that. As
the cost of college rises, more students
and families will look for ways to get more
bang out of their education buck. And
programs like this, that give students a
jump start on their skills and careers, are
a huge part of the solution. I have long
supported the Job Corps program. It
helps prepare Oregon students to join the
flourishing construction and technology
industry in Astoria and across
Oregon.Thank you all for your work and
your collaboration to help create a better
future for this generation.”
Ron Wyden, U.S. Senator, Oregon
“I first worked with Tongue Point students during Astoriaʼs Bicentennial.
Thanks to Pacific Power, the city was given 200 trees to plant, but we needed
lots of volunteers. As usual, Tongue Point students stepped up to the plate –
digging holes, planting and staking the trees, and mulching. Iʼve also worked
with them in Astoriaʼs new Chip-In Program. This program has been a tremendous
boon to the cityʼs efforts to spruce up its parks, and Tongue Point students have
been crucial to this success. Whether it was pruning, weeding, mulching, or
eliminating invasive species, the students pitched in enthusiastically. When
volunteers are needed, Tongue Point students always answer the call.
The students are also involved as interns throughout Astoria – in restaurants,
breweries, hospitals, and foster care homes, providing many needed services.
Tongue Point Job Corps is truly a gift to the Astoria community.”
Arline LaMear, Mayor of Astoria
