Columbians sink Warriors
Strange and Fruiht combine for 34 in Fishermen win

Rainier 35, Warrenton 30
WARRENTON — The
Warrenton Warriors ran out
of points, then ran out of
time Tuesday night at home,
as Rainier held on for a 35-
30 win over the Warriors in a
Lewis & Clark League boys
basketball game.
Warrenton held a 30-28
lead with 4:50 left, before the
Columbians answered with
back-to-back scores by Jeff
Tripp and Daniel Rea to grab
a 32-30 lead with 2:10 left.
From there, the Colum-
bians made just enough free
seconds to hold off the War-
riors.
The teams were tied 15-15
at halftime, as Brock Johnson
half with a pair of 3-pointers.
Teammate Kory Thomas
had two 3-pointers midway
through the second half, the
second following back-to-
back scores by Christian Holt
to help the Warriors to their
30-28 lead.
Colton Verhoef led Rain-
ier with nine points, while
Johnson had 12 for the War-
riors.

Astoria 54, Molalla 41
MOLALLA — A slow
start turned into a big sec-
ond quarter for the Astoria
boys basketball team Tues-
day night at Molalla, as the
Fishermen overcame an early
win over the Indians.
Kyle Strange (18 points)
and Morgan Fruiht (16) com-
bined for 34 points to lead
Astoria, which outscored
Molalla 19-7 in the second
period to take a 27-19 half-
time advantage.
Derek Jarrett added eight
points for the Fishermen, who
improve to 6-7 overall, and
will close out the nonleague
schedule at home vs. Yam-
hill-Carlton Friday, before
opening the league season
with home games vs. Banks
and Tillamook next week.

ESTACADA — Seaside’s
“Jaxson & Jackson” com-
bined for 39 points Tuesday
night, leading the Gulls to a
75-52 nonleague win at Es-
tacada.
Jaxson Smith scored 25
points and Jackson Januik
added 14 for the Gulls, who
pected loss at Delphian last
week, with a 65-38 win over
Vernonia Tuesday night at
home.
Knappa outscored the vis-
itors 37-14 over the second
and third quarters to take con-
trol.
Tyson Burnard scored 22
points, and Dakota Severson

Lady Warriors scramble, can’t overcome Columbians
Rainier 39, Warrenton 22
WARRENTON — With
both teams playing a little
short-handed, Rainier over-
at Warrenton Tuesday night,
in Lewis & Clark League girls
basketball action.
While the Lady Warriors
are still without Romana King
and Sophia Thomas, Rainier
lost leading scorer Jenny West-
lund before the game started,
when the senior guard reag-
gravated a knee injury during
pregame warmups.
Warrenton had 15 turnovers
Columbians struggled from
15-6 at halftime.
Rainier took control in the
third quarter, outscoring War-
renton 18-5, highlighted by a
three-point play from 5-foot-
10 freshman Desirae Hansen
and a 3-pointer from sopho-
more Haley Schimmel.
Landree Miethe led War-
renton with nine points, all in
the fourth period.
Astoria 49, Molalla 43
Tied 40-40 at the end of
regulation, Astoria outscored
Molalla 9-3 in overtime for
a 49-43 win over the Indians
Tuesday night, in a nonleague
girls basketball game at the
Brick House.
Molalla battled back from a

ters, outscoring Astoria 18-14
in the fourth to send the game
to overtime.
The Lady Fishermen had

rebounds, six steals and three
assists.
Teammates Taylor Mick-
le and Kaylee Mitchell had 11
points apiece, with Mickle dish-
ing out four assists. Mitchell
had three of Astoria’s 16 steals.
The Fishermen were 12-
for-31 at the free throw line,
Seaside 66, Estacada 39
ESTACADA — The Sea-
side Lady Gulls continued
their romp through the non-
league schedule, with a 66-
39 win at Estacada Tuesday
night.
Maddi Utti scored 21 points
to lead Seaside, with team-
mate Haylee Dundas adding
16. Sydney Villegas scored 12
for the Gulls, who held a slim
27-24 lead at halftime, before
erupting for a 29-4 third quar-
ter to put the game away.
Seaside “played fairly
-
fense and defense, but in the
third quarter we came out and
played great defense and that
set up our offense,” said Gulls’
coach Wally Hamer. “We
scored 29 points in that quarter
to break the game open. Syd-
ney Villegas played great de-
fense and Haylee Dundas shot
lights out in the quarter. Mad-
di Utti had a great all-around
game. Paige Ideue had a good
game off the bench as well as
Brittany West.”

KNAPPA — A balanced
scoring attack helped Vernonia
post a 55-41 win at Knappa
Tuesday night, in a key North-
west League girls basketball
showdown.
First-place Vernonia (11-2
overall) got 12 points apiece
from Julia Fletcher and Paige
Smith, and 11 points from
Lisa Paje in the victory. Team-
mates Marketa Veselkova and
Meghan Sullivan added eight
points each (Veselkova left
with an ankle injury in the sec-
ond quarter).
Knappa still put up a strong
effort against No. 4-ranked
Vernonia, as the home team
trailed just 26-22 at halftime.
“It’s the best I’ve seen my
girls play in a while,” said
Knappa coach Marie Green.
“Vernonia wasn’t superbig, but
they were quick.”
Shailei Wright had 10
and three assists to lead Knap-
pa. Kacie Cameron and Chloe
Little added seven points
apiece, and Stacey Aho scored
six points with 10 rebounds.
