SEASIDE — Members of Seaside Cub Scout Pack
540 recently made and placed swags for the veterans’
headstones at Evergreen Cemetery in Seaside.
The swags were constructed at the last den meeting of
the year, which was also the pack’s Christmas party. Im-
mediately after the party, Scouts and their families drove
to the cemetery, with maps in hand, to place the swags.
While at the cemetery, one Scout noticed some coins
placed on one of the headstones. That provided the op-
portunity to tell the Scouts the meaning of the coins being
left by someone who either knew, or served with, that
veteran.
The Schermerhorn family donated the hemlock for
the swags, and Scout Master Stan Gandy, Troop 642,
obtained a copy of the cemetery map with the veterans’
graves marked.
The pack hopes to make this Wood Badge ticket item
an annual event.
