Y I (2J Corvallis Times CORVALLIS, OREGON, TUESDAY EVEN1KG, MAY 7, 1907 Corvallis citizens are receiving letters from leading people in Eu gene urging this city to become in terested in the proposed canal be tween that city and Corvallis, Among others who have written in that interest is Judge Lawrence Harris. A recent meeting in ;Eu gene was of an enthusiastic char acter, and resulted in the appoint ment ot a committee to take up the matter with definite and determined ends in view. A partial survey of the route has -been made, and is . understood to have developed the entire practicability of the plan. The lact that Eugene is a place where the people do things, and the tact that they are agitating the canal subject is prima facie evi dence that the scheme is not an idle dream, but that it is worth while and that there is power behind it. DEATH OF ARTHUR BELKNAP. WHEN WASHINGTON COMES. To Corvallis, Interest Will Run High Next Monday's Track Meet. Interest is already aroused on the college campus as to the out come of the dual meet between Washington State College and OAC, which comes off here next Monday. The fact that the Pulnan athletes are making the long Oregon trip indicates that they have a strong bunch this year, and also the fact that they won easily from Whit man and Idaho in a triangular meet last Saturdav. OAC looks a little stronger on paper, but WSC has a well balanced team and may turn the trick on the Oregon mea. The meet is of peculiar interest owing to the fact that both teams are strong in a number of the same events, making the meet one of the most interesting ever held here, Welsch, of W. S. C. has done 4:39 in the mile and Davolt, of OAC is good for about the same, and as these two men are undoubtedly the best in the Northwest, records are liable to be smashed. Davolt is there also in the half mile, which race mill be a close finish with Ma honey, of Pullman, who can clip off about 2:05. Cowgill, of Wash ington, has vaulted about 10 feet 6 inches and Swann, of GAC is good for about 11 feet. Halm, of Pullman, and Hall, of Oregon, bave both done over 135 in the hammer, and Thoule, of the Wash ington athletes and Greenhaw, of Oregon are running under 53 sec onds in the quarter. Every event with the possible exception of the discus, which will go to big Thay er of WSC, who has done 119 feet 7 14 inches, making a new North west record and the high jump which will easily go to Chapman, of OAC. will be highly interesting, and not only will excitement be at a fever pitcb.but some good records will undoubtedly be made. An event of special interest will be a shot put in which Wolff of Or-- egon, and Halm of Washington, will compete. These: men can both j do about 40 feet in this event, and have many other points in common. Both are Freshmen, both star foot ball players, also among the 'best men that eachbaseball team possesses are of about the same ;age, height and build, all of which will make the shot put one of the most inter esting event of this meet. Having not met in football this year, each team will try to make this the de ciding victory of the year. Passed Away in Portland This Morning Malady Was Spinal Meningitis.
