I , I I f M Mias Daisy Harding, of Pert- i iaad, attended the Armory bop, Sat urday eveniDg. Ray M. Walker, of Independ ence, spent Sunday with Coiva lis fritnds. Mrs. Nelson and daughter and Miss Adele Goff of Al :any, and Dudly Clark of Eugene drove over from Albany Saturday evening for (he Armory bop. The dwelling bouse recently bought by C. I. titarr, west of Dr. Pernot's boaae, h&i bten moved to the eait side of the lota on which it is located, and is to have a new poich in front, new rooms in the rear and other improvements and embellishments. It is to be occu pied by Mr. Smrr and family. La ter on, ani ther dwelling may be eraeted on the west side of the site. Salem Statesman: There is not 'general satisfaction with the John eon road law passed at this session, and Mrs. Clara H. Waldo was in the city yesterday as a . representa tive of the Patrons of Husbandry, with some notion of urging the gov ernor to veto it. The bill was not satisfactory to all the members who voted for it, but it was the best that could be obtained this year and was accepted as a compromi-e. This bill has some good . features and others which are not so good, but taken altogether il would probably be the meats of getting seme per manent roads, though with a heavy outlay of state money. The short arm jab in the eolsr plexus by Representative Carter of Benton, eays the Oregoman, was enough ti put to eleep the Booth bill which bad passed the eecate to give the state game warden the privilege of charging 5O cents un each pheasant chipped out cf the ctate. The bill also provided for smaller charges on other bird mentioned.. Carter eaid that a number of persons are building np a gocd business in the bleeding of pheasants and that this ' bill would destroy this new industry. His motion to indefinitely postpone was carrried without a dissenting vote. The bill provided a charge of fifty cents on eich pheaeant, 25 on each quail and $1 on each deer shipped iut of the state. , Governor Chamberlain could not have made a better, selection -from bis party, nor indeed from any -party, for the office of commiseicn er ot the supreme court than Hod. Woodson T. Slater of this city, frays ! the Salem Statesman. He is a gen- tleman office legal and genertl at tainments, conscientious, booed and careful in all bis dealings and will render a fair judgment in aDy matter coming btfore him. Hon. William R. King of Malheur coun ty, the other appointee, is also a good fend worthy gentleman, an in- e'atigitle worker and is recognized as fair-minded and entirely just. Mr. Slater is a boo of Hon. James ?H. Slater, a former United Statas senator from this e,tate and has ntv er held office txcept as deputy state treasurer under his fatber-in-law, Gejrge W. Webb, in 1887-90. H has practiced law hers several yea s in partnership with Tilmon Ford and W. M. Kaiser. Mr. King was a member of the senate in i895-7 and was a candidate for governor against T. T. Gcer in I898. Oberer. Those present, all rela tives, were, B. F. Seely and wire, Miss Maria Allen of .Alsea; Mrs. Belle Williams of Washington county, (j. A. Seely. wire ana tnii- dreu, Corvallis. T. S. Creson, wite and children, Corvallis, E. G. Wil liams and wife, Portland, Mrs. ' F. J. Oberer and children, Falls City, Mrs. Wm- Hadley and Mrs. Wm. Davis, Portland, J. C. Woods and wife, Corvallis. The 'bridal pair" were the recipients of a number of presents appropriate for the occas ion. Mr. and Mrs. Seely were united in marriage in Iowa, February 22. 1 857 . They went to Wisconsin the following year. When the civil war began, Mr. Seely enlisted In Co. M, Third Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry and served nearly four years. During his service he re ceived an injury from which he is at this time suffering, and which largely incapacitated him from manual labor. From Wisconsin the family went to Kansas and from there they came to Oregon 19 years ago, residing for a time in Alsea. Mr. and Mrs. Seely are a worthy couple, and live at peace with their neighbors. They lead a cheerful Hie, having evidently, in younger days, taken on a store of sunshine which has served them well down the "shady side" and promises to illuminate their surroundings to the end. Real Estate Transfers. The following real estate trans fers have been filed at the court house since Thursday: M. V. Shelby to E. C. Johnson, 100 acres.i northwest of Corvallis, $140. David Ruble and wf. to O. J. Ruble, small tract, $1000. M. V. Leeper to Cora L,eep;r, 185 acres near Albany. ; Albert E. Bell and wf. to V. A. Vidito, two lots in block 3, N. B. and P.' Avery's add. $300. W. H. Ish and wf. to Evan Mc Lennan et el 320 a. s. of Philo math, $10. M. P. Burnett to Adam Wilhelm 1 a. in Mon'oe. ' " ';" United States to John Colman, 192 a. near Bellfountain. I. Carey, 112 ductor. He knew that none of the card-bearers wanted to be deposited at Oregon City, for hadn't they just left 8alem, but be could not refue their money. He might - have7 an idea that eotne of it at least was tainted, but it was not for him to say. But he got back. The "Sou. Pao. does not provide its ' hired hands with pennies, so instead of paying over $1,29, it cost the law makers $1.3U. At that the large number of people, who might,, had they wanted to, have increased the population of Oregon City, but did not, saved 10 cents, enough to buy a pair of beers or something else. - 'The whole thing was treated as a joke by the . former pass-owners. When one man handed his .pass and it was refused, it did . not stop the rest, and as the conductor pass ed down the aisles be was offered a pass from ' each member. Yes, it was a joke, all right. ' United States to B a. near Philomath. THEIR FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY. Golden Wedding of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Seely A Reunion. . ; "Sunday was a gala day at the - iome of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Seely. - who reside near the C. & E. depot. It was a celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding. It had been planned to have a reun ion of descendants and other rela- ; tives of the principals at a date Iprevious to Sunday, but it was not so convenient for all to attend at that time. t The reunion was of course the source of greater happiness to all. but there were incidents which heightened the pleasure of the time. TJarly in the afternoon a magnificent -dinner was served and partaken: of ty four generations, extending from Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Seely to the children of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Barney I. Carey to H. Hirsch berg, 112 a., $10. F. W. Holmes and wf. to F. L Holmes, 15 a. near Albany, $1. State of Oregon at Alvin Knapp, 324 a. n. w. of Corvallis, $405. Alvin Knapp and wf. to J. D. Garman, 324 a. n. w. of Corvallis, $2503. United States to W. J. Warfield 162 a. in Alsea. San Francisco, Cal., Feb. 23. As a direct result of the recent Jap aneae war scare, a formidable squad ron is to be maintained on the Pa cific Coast. ' This fleet is to be rap idly assembled and will consist of seven battle ships with a com pie ment of cruisers and auxiliaries This fleet will co-operate with the Asiatic squadron, in which are four battleships, or cruisers of battle ship strength. Even this combined fleet, it is pointed out, will be far inferior to the Japanese naval strength in Pacific waters. - ; The Pacific. Coast fleet will be die tributed along the co&Ets of Califor nia, Oregon and Washington, ax tra coaling-stations are to be pro vided, including one at San Diego anc another at California City, on San Francisco Bay. A drydock, the larceBt in th world, is to be r'ototracted at Hunters -Point, on 'San Francisco's Bay. It 'will ao commodate two battle enips at one time when completed. - The first steps toward the forma tion of a formidable Pacific fleet will be taken when the battleships Indiana and Iowa are sent to the coast. Tbde two ships will' form the nucleus of the Pacific battle ship squadron, which will be furth er strengthened by the addition of the new battle ship Nebraska; - now nearly completed at Seattle, and the battle ships Wisconsin a,nd, Or egon, which are now being exten eively overhauled at the Puget Sound Navy Yard. These nve.bat tie ships will be reinforced -during the next few months by two. more from the Atlantic. It is noted, however, that of. the vessels named, only the Nebraska is a modern, up-to-date warship Tbe Indiana is a sister ship of i the Oregon. The Iowa is only a year younger tbae the Indiana. The Wis consin was built iu 1898 .?''f" t. It is said to be the policy scf the navy department to unite the Asi atic fleet and the Pacific squadron into one great fleet, its component vessels to be interchangableand all under th) command of one of the three vice-admirals which it is thought congrees will authorize at an early date.
