"FATHER'S" LATEST. MUSTESCHEWPOLITICS POURING IN, EAGLE WILL SCREAM Reported to Have Forged Note on "Mother" The Friend of the Dear Boys has Fled. A letter that attracted some at tention in the late local option cam paign was signed "A Father" and purported to have been written from Corvallis. it professed to describe conditions in Corvallis, saying among other things that it a common sight to see half grown boys in a state of drunkenness, reeling on the streets of Corvallis. The latter appeared in the Albany Argus, a sort of "Billy Investigator" paper, published temporarily in the hope of defeating local option in I,inn county. The paper of course died with the election, as such pa pers usually do, and at last accounts the editor had fled and sought new fields and green pastures. The fol lowing from the Albany Demo crat describes his going: Where is P. B. Johnston, the ex printer? Paul Johnston prominent in the printing business in this city for two or three years, publisher of the Argus, left recently, it is ire ported, for new fields, leaving a wife and two children here, and numerous creditors. ,He is report ed to have gone to Salem, where according to the checks sent the Albany banks he secured $25 on one check, and $10 on another, and the next day was in Harris burg, from which place a$i5 check was sent to Albany with no funds to meet it. He is also reported to have obtained $200 on a note with tnenameot bis mother-in-law as endorser, not written by her or with her consent. He is thought to have gone into California. It has leaked out at Eugene, so the Guard says, that when the board of regents of the State-University met there Tuesday, the question of professors ins politics, was a topic of strenuous delibera tion. The paper says: "The Guard ! learns from an authoritative; source that at. yes terday's meeting the matter of cer tain members or , the University, faculty interesting themselves, in politics during the past year or, two was brought up and thorougly. dis-. cussed. It is said that one, of the new regents broached the subject and demanded that the . matter be investigated at once. It was charg ed that two or three members of the faculty had been unduly persist ent in mixing up in local and state politics, and it is generally rumor ed on the streets, that they will be Lrequested to resign. It is charged that at least one member . of 1 the faculty made himself conspicuous recently in circulating a petition to have the local option question sub mitted again to the voters of I,ane county. Other members it is said, have been active in municipal poli tics. 'The board of regents is said to be determined that the members of faculty must hereafter attend strict ly to their duties and do away with politics. If resignations are not asked for the offending members of the faculty will probably be given directions as to their future, course ia political campaigns." In Memory of Mrs. Peterson. Johnson's. jars at Thatcher Orders for Mountain Water Connections Renters and Landlords. The gang of men that is con necting consumers with the Moun tain Water system is overwhelmed with orders, aod though making taps at the rate of 15 to 20 per day is unable to make headway against the demand. More than 150 ' ap plications have already been filed and others are pouring in. The complaint about the tapping charge is but little heard, lor consumers realize that what they pay now, they won't have to pay later in water rates, and that they are in reality paying the money in part to themselves. It is said that renters all over town are notifying their landlords that mountain water con nections must be made or the prop erty will be vacated, and the renter move to houses where mountain water is to be had. It is due land lords to say they are generally or dering the water put into their houses. Mr. Pugh, Mr. White and anoth er Philomath man attended the meeting of the Water Committee Monday night, preliminary to an adjustment of terms and arrange ments lor water in Philomath for fire protection and domestic use. The Water Commission went to Philomath last night, and the two visits are said to have resulted in an agreement by which Philomath is to have water lor both purposes on the same terms as Corvallis. ' A proposition for an occupation tax was laid aside as un desirable, while a plan to bring the suburbs within the city limits so as to build up the taxable, property is looked upon with favor, and is like ly to, be. adopted. The sum of $875 license money has already been re bated to the saloon .men wh are puc out of business by- the verdict in June, All the , saloon men are prer paring for the end which trans pires tomorrow night, when all will shut their doors for the last time. Many of them are going to places that are wet to engage in business, while others remain in Albany and await for the county to change its notion and go back to a wet status.
