The funeral of Miss Isabel Whit by occurred from the family borne near Willamett. Grange ball yes terday afternoon at two o'clock. Mieb Whitby died about noon Tues day after a lingering illness. The operation eix months ago in a Port land hospital for removal of a tumor, is familiar history to all the county. It , was not a successful operation, because vital organs and I ligaments were so involved that complete removal was impossible. 'With great fortitude, however, the young woman maintained ins un equal straggle, and for six months subsequently survived a fate that physicians thought at times could not extend beyond the ordeal of !the terrible opera' ioD. 1 Three weeks ago, Miss Whitby was taken to Portland for further treatment, and after a few days, was brought home, unimproved. All that affection and medical ecience could do was bestowed in the vain hope of finding relief, but Tuesday toe end came MORE BUILDING. For the State College Million Dollar Appropriation Bill : r Passed. Within a short time, funds will be available for the construction of a woman's building and drill quart ers for the-cadet regiment at. the State College The sum is $6;,- ooo, and it is probable that building operations will be undertake in the very near future. One result of the election is that the people have voted to approve of the Million Dollar appropriation bill. It will be remembered that the measure was a huge omnibus bill in which appropriations for state institutions were indiscriminately grouped to gether with Normal School and other appropriations. It was pass-, ed during the last day of the legig; lative session, but not until after Governor Chamberlain had induced the legislature to eliminate the emergency clause so the referendum could be applied to the bill, r This the people did, and at Monday's election, they voted on the ques tion of v- whether or not the bill should be vetoed, or approved. - According to the returns announ The funeral was attended by ced, they voted to approve the bill. many irom Uorvams, including school chums, college mates, and family friends. The inttrment was in the rural cemetery ne r the fam ily home. The service was con ducted by Dr. Thompson, and was simple. A wealth of flowers testi fied to the high esteem in which the dead was held. Miss Whitby was a graduate of the state college in the class of ly04. .-; Sbe was a talented, brave and amiable young woman, ' and a wide circle of friends of herself and family mourn her passing. It is believed that thousands voted for the measure that intended to vote against it, due to the manner in which it was stated. However that may be, the bill has the sanc tion of the popular ballot and will become effective as soon as the formality of an official count and the issuance of the governor's pro clamation can be made. This form ality will - require two or three weess, probably, i ne law says that the official vote shall be can vassed by the secretary of A state in the presence of the governor within 30 days after the. election- Im mediately thereafter, the governor shall issue a proclamation declaring the result of the referendum vote, 'and the" measure so proclaimed shall become operative on the date of the proclamation. "The law is as follows: Section 9. It shall be the duty of the secretary of state, in the presence of the governor, to pro ceed within thirty days after the election and sooner if the returns be all received, to canvass the vo'es given to each measure, and the governor shall forwith issue his proclamation, which shall be pub lished in like manner as other proclamations herein provided for, giving the whole number cast in the state for and against each meas ure in question, and declaring such measures as ere approved by a ma jority of those voting thereon to be in fall force and effect as the laws of the state of Oregon from the date of said proclamation HOME-SEEKERS If you are looking for ..some, real good bargains in Stock, Grain, Fruit and Poultry Ranches, write for'our special list, or come and see us.
