CREFFIELD. Shot by George Mitchell in Seattle and Instantly Killed. Seattle, Wath., May .7. Frsiiz Edmund Cretfi'jld, self-stvlcd 'Jisbua," leader of the Holy Roll ers, was shot and instantly killed on First avmue, nar Cherry street at 7:lo o'cifick Uiis morning by George Mitchell of Po tUcd. CrerH;elcl wss the leaiierot the band of H iiy R)!lerj tbatcaused eso much excilenenl at Cirvaliir, three years ago Mitaheli runcta no attempt to escape altr the shooting, but flood busidy the body of hid prostrate victim uutii patrolman Lscoum )lacea hino tnler urreft. H told the po ice that he bad i-ho', Creffield because be bai ruined bis two td-ers, Mi a. Burgess Starr and Mies Eohel Mitchell. A soon as he reach tbe city jail Tklitchall asked permission to etwi a telegram. Ha tent the following 4a 0. V. Hurt at Corvallie, the tdther of deffield'd wife: "I've got ray man. I'm in jiil here." "GEORGE." . The shotting of Crrffield whs witnessed by bis wife and a few other pedestrians. It took pUca outside the Quick drugstore io rh heart of the retail district. Mitchell -has been in Seattle riace Wednes day looking lor Creffield. Mitchell was walking up First -avenue when he saw Creffield com . iog down First avenue with bis wife oa his arm. Mitchell stepped in close to the drugstore and as Creffield and his wife went by he drew a 38-calibre revolver, sending a ball through the back of Creffield 's head. The bullet came out above the right eye. Creffield tell to the eidewalk and was carried into tbe drugstore and Dr. Bories was sum moned. Crtffield's wife threw herself "down by bis side and wound her firms around bis neck, kissing bis lips and hysterically exclaiming at "the same time: "Ho OoniiOt die, he cannot die; he did no barm to Gsorge Mitchell." Dr. Bories lifted her to her feet Bay ing: "But he is dead, madam." The woman was taken to police headquarters with her husbtnd's elayer and held as a witness. The Crtffields have been here for a little over a ramtb. They have been livir.g in a little antic roam at 1116 Fifth avenue The only fu' niiure .in the roi m was two chairs, a cheap table and a sleeping cot. The only clothes the womsn had oa was a tattered skirt snl ehutwaist. Her husbani yesterday promised to bay ber a new tkirt, and lh?y were on there way to the etore to purchase ii when he was shot. Mrs. Creffield says hr husband did not see Mitchell. She caught sight of hiui ju-t as he pulled tbe trigger. Mitchell is 23 years old snd gave bis occupalicn as a labor er. At police headquarters he said. 'I killed him; I have been look ing for him, and I got him. I have no regrets. I am willing to take any punishment that is meeted out to me without a whimper . I did not kill a man, I killed a brute. He obtained a devilish influence over my two sifters and rained them and I did only what any true brother would do." The police agree with Mitchell and gave him the best quarters in the jail making his imprisonment as comfortable as possible. It developed that Creffield has been married here twice. Over two years ago Justice George married him. The marriage license and certificate ehows a ceremony per formed between "Franz fi. Carefield and Miss Ida M. Hunt." The police believe that Cref9ld gave incorrect names to hide his identity." His nama is Creffield and not Carefield. His wife's name la Maude Hurt. . They lived at South East Seattle for a time with Frank Hurt, the wo man's brother. Mitchell says his sisters told him that Creffield, or "Apostle Joshua," as he liked to be called, was greater than Dhrist. Creffield served two years in the penitentiary at Salem. "While in the penitentiary his wife obtained a divorce from him. He got out of the penitentiary in Feb ruary with good conduct allowance. He then went to Waldport,Or., and gathered about him the faithful fol lowers who stuck by him. Threats of lynching drove him out of Oregon. He came to Seattle, won hia divorced wife back and cn April 3, little over a month ago, married her for the Eeeond time. H". went out to South Ssattle and won her brother back. He sold his home and took the proceeds to Waldport to hold together his fol lowers. Creffield was going to leaa for Waldport in a few days. On Streets How Tuberculosis is Con tractedA Docroi's Statement. . There ought never to be failure to destroy the sputum of a con sumptive. That is what a local physician said this morning. It never ought to be expectorated on the street. There is death in it. It. soon dries and the tubercle is taken up in the dust and somebody may breathe it. A lady may take it up on her skirt, introduce it into the home where by the same pro cess the deadly germ gains access to human lungs. It is now known that people are not born with con sumption. Ouce that was believed but it i-n't true. Members of a family may be pronouncedly sus ceptible to it. It is also known now that a very heavy per centof tuber culosis is contracted by breathing the bacilla. In some cases of course the contractive proces-i is by swal lowing the germ. Most or all of such cases are communicated by one of these methods, and that is why the sputum should be completely and faithfully destroyed. Patients themselves should use a paper box or a damp rag in expectoration, which after use should be carefully burned. The per cent of tuber culosis is largely reduced in places where proper sanitation in these respects are observed, and is not reduced where contrary conditions prevail. No man, no woman, no child is -safe from consumption where tubercular sputum is care lessly expectorated. Notice to Property Owners. ' thing is more important to Corvallis th i the good healtl) of her people. How cai. tbey fill their place in this busy to u unless they are well? No one trouble ia responsible for more nervous ills, sleeplessness, general debil ity, weakness, back-aches, rheumatic pains, even ill-temper and peevishness, than indigestion. Fortunately a combination of reme dies, called Mi-o-na stomach tablets, has been discovered that absolutely cures in digestion and restores to health and strength the whole digestive system. The use of Mi-o-na is a safeguard against ma ny illb ; it acts directly upon the gastric glands, restores perfect action to the di gestive ergans, aids the assimilation of food, and so strengthens the whole di gestive system that you can eat anything at any time without fear of indigestion. Just one little tablet out of a 5O cent box of Mi-o-na before meals for a few days, and you will soon regain perfect health and strength, and be able to eat anything digestible withont fear of stom ach dimcuities. So reliable is Mi-o-na in curing all forms of stomach weakness and troubles that Graham & Wells give a signed guar antee that the remedy will cost nothing unless it cures. Mi-o-na sells for 5O cents and is invaluable to any one who suffers with indigestion, nervousness or week stomach. Inoculated Refl Clover Aluke Rape, Alfalfa, Speltz White clover and Arti chokes.
