Dr. and Mrs. Bennett of Mon
roe were Corvallis visitors yester
day. Reuben Kiger went to Portland
yesterday to attend the sale of floe
horses.
Mr, Logan, the Kings Valley
miller, was a visitor in Corvallis

L. L. Porter, son in-law of Mr.
and Mrs. John Spangler of this city
was defeated for the nomination for
senator in Clackamas by Brownell,
but by only a slight margin.
Brownell is under indictment in the
land fraud cases, but asserts his in
nocence. The Presbyterian) Missionery
society was pleasantly entertained
by Mrs. Mike Bauer, Wednesday
afternoon. The program embraced
a vocal duet by Mrs. E. R. Lake
and Mrs M. S Woodcock; reading,
Lena Tartar, paper by Mrs. Lee,
instrumental solo, Lillian Ranney,
paper, Mrs. George Waggoner, vo

The plans are ready and car
penters are preparingbids for a' new
cottage to be built by Prof. Craw
ford, clerk and purchasing5 agent at
the college. The site of the struct
ure is the southwest corner of the
Irwin block on Eighth between Jef
ferson and Adams. The foundation
is already there, and the lots have
been tiled and lawn started. There
is to be a seven foot basement, a
first floor with 10 foot ceiling and a
second floor of nine feet. Work is
to begin as soon as the contract is
let which is expected to be in a few
days. All t'.e arrangements will
be modern, and l':e building an or
nament to the i lock. Exclusive of
the basement, the cost will be $1,
300 to $1,500. . " .v.

The Unterrified have a candidate
for county commissioner in the field.
He is a man of affairs with a long
head for finance and a lifetime of
ex, erience in Benton county. Best
of all, he is a man of known in
tegrity, a reputation atovereproach
and a Soap Creeker.
The new candidate is Paul Dode
le. He U not unknown to n the
people of Benton. A, good many
years ago he lacked but a few votes
of administering a defeat to that
fine old Benton county farmef,
William Knotts, for the office of
commissioner. When the vote was
counted, in spite of a heavy repub
lican majority, Billy had only fifty
odd votes to the good over Mr.
Dodele. The incident is mentioned
here as showing the strength of the
Soip Creek farmer. ;
The nomination came : to Mr.
Dodele half by accident J half by
design. He was not a candidate.
He has never, infact,sought office
at all. He is a busy farmer engross
ed with the affairs' his' foresight, and
industry have gathered around his
farm home. At the late primaries,
a number of democrats cast their
votes for Mr. Dodele. In all there
were 45. After that, pressure was
brought on him and he agreed to
run. His acceptance was filed with
the clerk last Friday, and his name
will be on the ticket. He is a man,
straight on all questions, and ' ex
tremely well qualified for the posi
tion. He has always been opposed
to the office of roadmasterin Benton
county. '
