Miss Paulina Kline returned Tuesday evening from a month's visit with Portland relatives. Over 200 cases of typhoid fev sr have been reported at Eugene, the doctors announcing the new cases as of virulent form. E. W. S. Pratt attended the Tecently organized Oregon State Optical Association which met in Portland February 19. Eugene Guard: Fred D. Her bold has sold his East Park phar macy in Butte, Mont., and will re turn to Eugene shortly. Up to yesterday, 3.64 inches o rain had fallen during the current month, all of it since the clear -weather gave place to the s'orm that has since been prevalent. News from Sam T. Thurston, who went about six months ago to Phoenix, Arizona for the benefit of his health, is that he is very ill 'with pneumonia. The friends attending the Bap tist social on Wednesday were de lightfully entertained, aud the young people feel very grateful for so much kind patronage, -and hope to receive it again in the near future. There is talk of a bank at Philomath- The proposition is to make it a National bank, if it shall be started. The man who is figur ing on the enterprise halls from Idaho. He wants a tew Phiiomites to ta'ie stock in the enterprise. Hugene Liuarcl: .Four young men, students at the university "flunked" or failed in the recent examinations, and they have left for their respective homes. .These lour men belonged to no fraternity, are net members of the football team, the basketball team, the base ball team nor the track team. The condition of Mrs. Mary Wyatt ot Philomath, who under went an operation for cancer of the breast last week, is improved. The operation ,vas performed by Dr. Pernot, assisted by Drs. Cathey and Newth. A large portion of the breast was cut away. Mrs. Wyatt is the widow of the late Ezra Wyatt. Tonight in the Armory occurs the annual game of basket ball be tween the rival teams of the state university and state college. The greatest interest of all the-year is usually in the contests at sport be tween representatives of the two institutions. In basket ball, the college men have always a little more than held their own with the university players. Whether they can keep the record clean tonight, .remains to be seen. The installation of new boilers In fie Corvallis saw mill is now in progress. Along with the improv ment go a number of others. A 30 by 42 feet extension on the north now houses the planers, a new $1,500 affair among them. The carriage for the log way is to be newly built. A dozen other renew als equally important are to go in. Wheu all are completed, the inter ior will be almost wholly new. Ten or 15 days will yet be required to complete the task- The shutdown and the beginning of repairs was instituted several days ago. The extension of the railroad siding down Water street was completed to the mill yesterday. A oleasant surprise party was given T. H. Wellsher, Tuesday evening, the occasion being the 51st anniversary of his birth. The annual basket-ball game between the State University and O. A. C. team takes place in the college armory tonight. A. K. Handy arrived Wednes dayjjfrom Iowa, where he went sev eral weeks ago. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Nolan went to Portland yesterday for a soiourn of a few days. Misses Veata Wallace and Eva French, of Albany, attended the Armory hop Thursday evening. Mies Elizabeth Snipes, of The Dallep, arrived yesterday for a week's visit with college friends. Two Eastern families arrived Wednesday. They are the advance guard of he large list of incomers expected as a result of the low rail road rates which went into effrct February loth. In these rates, it only costs $25 fare from any Mis Foarl river point to Oregon. Five carloadp of immigrants came into Portland a day or two ago. Some believe more Eastern people will settle in Oregon this year than came last year. 1 Harry Walker, the victim of the dynamite explosion is rapidly recovering, and bids fair to emerge from hie late experience with but slight permanent injury. The sight of the injured eye is coming back fast and will apparently be as good as ever within a short time. He is also able to hear a little in the ear that was so badly torn, and there is hope that the condition of that or gan will much improve. There is a slight change for the better in tbe condition of W. R. Dilley, the Corvallis boy who is ill with typhoid fever at Little Falls, Wasbirgton. Three others who were stricken with the disease, at the same place and about the same time, have died. All four drank water from the same well, which water, it is said by the physicians, to be the source of the disease. The new dwelling of J R Brown, west of tbe Bodine warehouse, is now in tbe hands of tbe painters aod paper hangers. Of carpenter work only two or three days of in side finishing remains to he done. The buildicg is not to be occupied however, until the latter part of the coming month. The lodge of Washiogtons cel ebrated Washington's birthday in an appropriate manner in the. Odd Fellows hall last Dight. There was an attendance of over 100, aod a long literary and mut-ical program. An address wa made by John W. Ingle, aod there was a banquet as a closing feature cf the occasion. Thf WashiogtoDS is one of the larg est lodges in towo, having a mem bership of about I20. Deputy Master of State Grange George W. Denmao, has called a meeting of tba county convention of delegates. This is a meeting whm delegates to the State Grange are chosen, and suggestions on legisla tion are offered. The meeting oc curs Saturday, March 3, at 1 p. m. in tbe office oi tbe school eupenn tendent. An Oregonian dispatch says th committee on mines aod mining agreed today to make a favorable report on the Mondell bill provid ing tor the endowment of schools or departments of mining in connec tion with state colleges for the ben efit of agriculture and mechanic arts. Under the bill money derived from tbe sale of lands in the various states and territories is to be devot ed to the new departments, The amount to be given each de partment for the first year is to te ilo.ooo, and thereafter it is to in crease Sl.ooo a year until the amount reaches $2o,ooo annually The states and territories which are to profit by the bills are Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kan sas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
