In Brother's Woodshed Had Arrived ' ! the Day Before from Iowa. ' Mellville C Lewis, who ; arrived Tuesday from Iowa, committed su icide at the home of his brother, Ambrose Lewis, at half-past five o' clock Wednesday morning. The bloody deed was accomplished with a revolver. Lewis took the weapon in his left hand, placed it slightly in front of and a little above his left ear, and fired. Tbe ball passed out at nearly the same spot on the op-posit-) side of tbe head, and buried itself in a door. The tragedy occurred in the wood shed at the Ambrose Lewis home on Ffth street. The , property is known as the J. H. Albrigtt house. At about 6 o'clock Ambrose Lewis bad arisen, and was in the kitchen making a fire, when Melville Lew is pissed through. A cheerful "good morning" passed between the brothers, and Melville weLtitto the woodshed. Ambrose leturned shortly to bis bedchamber to finish dressing. Wnile there he heard the report of a pistol, but thought little of it. as neighbors habh of sh(fotin had been in the ooting rats., shortly af terward he entered the woodshed to get teed for his . cow,: and . nearly stumbled oyer tbe . form -of his biotber. . .;'.. 1 J he tody was removed , to tbe morgue,, and at 1U:3U ; ao lnquert wa field by Coroner Wilkins. He arrived Tuesday from Oelwein, , Iowa, ex pecting to spend th', summeriD Cor vallis with hU broiher, iu the hope of benefitting his health, which had been poor for some time. Tuesday afternoon the brothers called on several friends about town, and in the evening a number of former Iowa friends gathered at the Lewis home and ep nt a few hours con versing with the visitor, Mr. Lew is seemed wearied by his long jour ney, but professed himself as de lighted with Oregon.. He retired, apparently in good spirits, and no thought of the impending tragedy occurred to the minds of tbe rela tives. . , ., It was at first intended to ship the remains East, but the final de cision wa9 to the dontrary, and the funeral was held at two o'clock Thursday from the house of Am brose Lewis. The sermon was by a minister who came from Ashland for the purpose, who was for a tim pastor in Iowa of the Presbyterian church to which deceased belonged. The Presbyterian choir rendered several hymns,' and Rev. Bush also spoke. '.Interment was in Crystal Lake cemetery.
