Corvallis Times Official Paper of Benton County. TWO SIMPLE QUESTIONS. CORVALLIS, OR, JUNE 28, J905. THEY WONT OWN IT. The Little Doorstep Publication They Edit Wanted,--a Father. That That Somebody Ought to Answer Whence Came Certain Information. A diversion of last Saturday af ternoon was the appearance of an unowned, unfathered, unclaimed, -three page four column circular, called the "Investigator." It was left on people's doorsteps all over town, just as a disgraced and un fortunate girl leaves her offsprng, deserted and forsaken, at the door of a home. The name .of no citi zen nor of anybody else appears as sponsor for the little Ihing, and all that is known of it is that it was printed at the Gazette office. There only one person in the office is said to know who edits and pays for the thins, and that person is re quired never to reveal to anybody the identity ot tne tamers or tne little foundling. . The contents of the sheet is an appeal to the people of Corvallis to continue to use Willamette river water, to shut their eyes when they drink it, and to never, never think of the graveyard of which that riv er is the drainage. Why, in par ticular, thev want that water used the own and only editors of the little doorstep daisy do not put it into the mouth of their offspring to say. They attack the proposed new water system from every stand point, and with some of the funni est arguments ever sprung on a community, of course with an eye single only to force people if pos sible to continue to use Willamette 'water, with its dead carcasses, and sewage from the Corvallis ' Flour ing mills, and drainage from Har- risburg, Eugene and all other up river towns. . Of course the thing costs consid erable money, and it is left on door steps tree or charge. J. here is no explanation of where the money comes from or how the publishers are to get it back, or of why some body is so anxious for Willamette water to continue to be used in Cor vallis. All this is one of the most peculiar of all the peculiar things about the little doorstep publica tion, which its own relations wont acknowledge. They even hire strange hands to lay it on people's doorsteps and compel the printer to never, never tell on them. Holy Rollerism may have had its peculiarities, but it never betrayed anything so spectacularly fantastic as the spectacle of able-bodied men getting up a product like the "In vestigator' ' forcing the printer to secrecy and then hiring . somebody to slip around and leave the thing on people' sjdoorsteps. The wonder is, if they want Willamette water to continue to be used," why don't they come out in the open and say so. like men, not skulk' around, ashamed to let people know that the "Invest I go to em is tlieir own and only forsaken little waif. The incident is mentioned here as a matter of news to country readers of the Times. Town peo ple, who know all abouc where it comes from and what it means, are glad that the little thing is not real flesh and blood but only, a lot of sewage from Crystal Lake cemetery at which all hold their noses while they smile. Here is what one of the oppon ents of good water says: "Why Engineer Miller figures it out that 500 families in Corvallis will take mountain water if the new system is built; why, he is wrong, because only 125 families take water-works water now." If the statement of this illustrious and progressive citizen be true, it is information of the utmost value to those who favor . good water. It is positively known that the reven ues of the' old company were about $5,300.00 last year. Now, if there is enough income from other sourc. es so that 1 25 families using water for domestic purposes yields an ag gregate revenue of $5,300 per year, what will be the revenue if good water comes to town and 500 famil ies use it for domestic purposes? It is noticeable that Engineer Miller did not take into account the business houses along Main street, the barber shops, the livery stables, the steam engines out of which a very great per cent of rev: enue is derived. He did not take into account the lawn sprinkling during the summer months. He simply figured on the number of families that would use the water and placed the rate very low. The statement, therefore, of this friend of Willamette water that only 125 families are using now, and along with it the positive knowledge that the water revenues last year were $5,300 makes it certain that Engin eer Miller's estimate of the reven ues from the new System is too low Yes, unwittingly, this citizen, when he tells that only 125 families use water-works water now, lets out an unanswerable argument in favor of adoption of the pending plan. Since, however, . only the old Water Company knows how many Corvallis families take water, how did this citizen find it out? Who posted him on the subject, and why? And, incidentally, for whom is he arguing. and why? Loretta Starr et al to Josie James 30 a southwest of Blodgett, $2. ' Max A.- Winkler to Joseph Pa zina, 160 a near Summit, $t,200. Hattie B. We had several doctors but they did him no good. One bottle of this rem- . edy cured him, as our neighbors will tes tify I thank God foi so valuable a med- . cine." For sale by Graham & Wortham.
