Zephin Job, the former Cor
valiis banker is still at Butte, Mon
tana; where he holds a position in
a bank. He is also purchasing a-
vicinity, and is prospering. He
owns and with his. family occupies,
his own brick home.
Chief Lane is at Kent, 1 East
ern Oregon, at the bedside of his
brother who is dying with con
sumption. The summons to Chief
Lane came last Saturday noon, and
he left by the evening stage for the
scene. Officer Osburn is acting
chief in the interim, which will ex
tend for a week or more. ; O. B.
Conner is acting nightwatch.
p Saturday afternoon the ( ladies
' of the Episcopal Church observed
Arbor Day, by meeting at the
church and putting the grounds in
order. The . grass was cut, rose
bushes pruned, flower beds weeded'
and two trees set out. The after
noon closed with an informal held
in the rectory.
Two prizes are offered for the
best collections of Benton . County
woods. The collections are wanted
for the Benton exhibit for the Lewis
and Clark, and the prizes are offer
ed by . the county court. The a
wards will be made at the May term
of the county court. Several
schools in the county are said to be
competitors for these prizes.
The prospect is for wool to
boom in price this season. That
does not mean that the figures are
to soar, but that they are al
ready, the best known in years.
Twenty one and a half with tbe
possibility of 22 for a bang up lot,
was the figure a local dealer talked
about yesterday. Only a little, of
course is changing hands, all such
being clipped from sheep about to
be sold for mutton. A grower who
; talked on the subject said he hoped
for 25 cents, but . the dealer who
stood by said that while the price
wouia prooaDiy be better than at
present, 25 cents could hardly be
hoped : for. , Willamette valley
-wools were quoted in New York
the other day a 21 1-2 to 26.

Those who have seen it, say a
fifteen acre field of alfalfa on
Richard Kiger's farm is a sight to
delight the eye of the observer.
The growth is now about eight
inches high and of most thrifty ap
pearance. ,..
An ordinance is pending in the
city council which provides that all
pavements and crossings shall be en
tirely unencumbered by displays of
wares, or in other manner. For
violations, a fiie not to exceed $20
is provided.
W. D. B'gelow, in the chemic
al department at O. A. C. in 1889
and 189o, left Monday after having
been a Corvaliis visitor for a few
day?. He is now in the Pure Food
department at Washington, D. C,
where he holds an important posi

V Will Johnson, who held asim-
llar position at St. Louis last year,
is to be an assistant in the depart
ment of horticulture, at the Lewis
and Clark Fdir. . He-, is taking a
course in medicine at St. Louit?, and
finishes his second year and will
leave for Oregon in ra Jew weeks.
He is to have two more years at
the medical college.
Members of the crack company
that is to drill for 0. A. C. at the
Lewis and Clark, are to be ar
rayed in new drab uniforms. The
color snd material is the same that
will be used hereafter at the college,
being the new standard uniform , of
the United States army. The uni
form costs about $6 less and
is said to be superior in quali
ty, appearance and durability to
those now in use. A cutter and
fitter from San Francisco is to be
at the college the latter part of this
week to take orders and measure
ments for thoae who wish to order
the new uniforms. - .
The claims of the firemen on
account of the sawmill fire five or
six weeks ago, have been cut. Some
of the bills were for 10 hours serv
ice for the men at 50cents per hour,
making the bills $5.35 per man.
The matter was referred to. the fire
department and a special commit
tee from the department recom
mended that six hours's service be
the extreme allowance. This was
done by the council, and payment
has been made accordingly. A res
olution was adopted, fixing the pay
of tbe fire chief at not to exceed 75
cents per hour and firemen not to
exceed 40 cents pet hour. The pay
does not begin until the fire is un
der control and then extends until
the apparatus is housed. Only four
men can be called into service by
the chief, to serve under pay.
