Ruthyn Turney returned Sat urday from a week's visit " with friends in Southern Benton. Horace Lilly was the guest from Saturday until Monday of his sister, Mrs. B. Mason at Wren. Miss Leona- Scott returned Monday from an absence of some weeks in Albany and other places. Ed Wills came up from Wells Monday and left yesterday for Eu gene, where he has a timber claim. Mr. and Mrs. C A. Bareinger left Saturday for Butteville, Marion county to reside. After a visit with Benton rel atives and friends, Wesley Byers returned to Portland Friday. Sam Thurston of Crawfords ville, has been a Corvallis visitor this week. He arrived Monday. Miss Melvena Elgin is again on duty as saleslady at Kline's af ter being confined to her home for several days with illness, Enroute irotn Ritzville, Wash, to their home in Hanford,, Califor nia, M. W. Starr and family were guests Saturday and Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Wellsher. The marriage of Miss Lillian Johnson, a graduate ot OAC, oc curred at Vale, Eastern Oregon, on Christmas day. The groom is Charles LeMoine. Rev. Ray Palmer D. D. will commence evangelistic meetings in the Baptist church ' Thursday ev ening. at 7:30. Cordial invitation to all. . Miss Thella Rickard leaves the last of this week for Portland, where she has accepted a position in the trimming department of Lowengart's wholesale millinery house. 1 A.late letter from -Coach Steckle was written on board the train while he was in Colorado, enroute East from Nevada. It was ' to Lietenant Quinlan and was dated January 2oih. Dr. Steckle ex pects to remain in Michigan about six weeks He was accompanied by his brother with whom he left Corvallis. The J. M. Cameron residence property has been purchased by T. K. Fawcett who will occupy -the place- immediately. The price paid was $2,200. The property is located at the corner of Jefferson and Eighth,' and consists of five lets, residence and barn. The sale was negotiated by J. L. Lewis. J. -M. Cameron left with his family yesterday morning for Pom eroy, Washington, where he is own er of a harness and saddlery busi ness, purchased several weeks ago. 1 Mr. Cameron is a good citizen in any community, and his departure from Corvallis, after a business residence of nearly a quarter of a century, is widely regretted. Friday evening the men of the First Methodist church gave a re ception to the members and num erous invited guests, the affair tak ing place in the church parlors. The program included singing by the company, selection by male quartette, an excellent , original poem by S. B. Bane: a vocal solo and two encores by R. N. White, graphophone selections and other features. The occasion was much enjoyed by the large crowd present. Rev. Bush having , called at tention to "Letter to the Clergy of Corvallis" at a public assembly, and made the assertion that '.'Spir its do not walk the earth todav," brings forth an answer from the resident speaker of the First Spir itual Union of Corvallis. Taking 1iie Bible as authority, evidence will be produced to sustain the af firmation "Spirit return and spirit communication are with us today. Guy Newton and William JSewton and family returned to Portland on Monday's boat after a month's stay in Corvallis. " Mr. Cameron's term would have expired in June. Two hundred and fifty acres off the farm of John Whitaker was sold last wck to J. E. Zeigler of Gervais, for $7,200, The sale in cludes the hopyard and was nego tiated by Jamts L. Lewis. Ambler & , Walters' have sold the 45-acre home of C. Dexton, just west of Philomath, to A. Woods, late of Monmouth, Oregon. The price is $2,250, Mr. Woods taking possession March 1st. The Corvalli3 GraDge will meet next Saturday the 28th inst. at 1 o'clock p, m. The officers for the coming year will be installed by the Willamette Grange. A good time is guaranteed. , All Grangers are requested to be present and take part in the work. The force at the county clerk's office is engaged in making exten sions on the tax roll. The work cannot be closed up until after Feb ruary fii si , on account of bills pend ing in the legislature. Within a few days after the 1st, however, the wo k will be completed, and the rolls be. turned over to Sheriff Bu nett for collection of taxes. Preparatory to the collection of taxes, Sheriff Burnett is making out lists of taxpayers and the valu ations I f their property to ba sent into all the precincts for thetonven ience of trose who have taxes to pav. 'By means of these lists each individual can a certain the amount of his tax and send it to the sheriff without making a trip to Corvallis, expressly for the purpose. The ar rangement, though it involves con s;derable trouble for the sheriff is a tim?-saver for taxpayers. At a meeting Mooday night the city council adopted an ordi nance prescribing regulations to be observed in connecting houses and toilets with sewers. -The Work must be under the inspection of the clref if p iice. All the fittings, the materials to be us. d and essen tials in the work are desgnated in the ordinance. A resolution was adopted directing that in all instan ces, connections must be made by July 1st at all residences served by water and lateral sewers. The Western Union Telegraph Company is arranging to install a system of electric clocks in Corval lis business houses. .The company furnishes the clock, and charges $1 per month for use of it. ( Each clock is connected by ; telegraph with a clock in the Western Union office,- known as the sub-master clock. It is the regulator of. per fect character and its time is abso lutely accurate. It regulates each of the' other clocks to the fraction of a second, correcting time every hour if necessary. Each day at noon, time is sent out by telegraph by the observatory at Portland, and the net result is that absolutely cor rect time is provided for in the sys tem. "A number of business places have already ordered the . clocks. among them most of the jewelers, and the postomce. A new attraction for the opera house is Mahara's carnival of Mm strelsv. dated for February 4th. It is said to be the best einging com' pany on the road. The production partakes in part of the character of a comic opera, lhe company re cently appeared for a week at the Lyceum theatre in San Francisco, running from January 1st to Janu ary 8th. " Duning the period they played to 18,462 paid admissions. Of the performances, Henry Bush, the manager says: ' Maharas Min strels played to the largest week's business done at my theatre for ov er a year. I cheerfully recommend it as a good show, and will only be too glad to give a returndate when ever they come this way." Philomath Items. Elder Mauer of Salem, held quar terly meeting services at - Baulah church last Sunday . - Prof, W, T. Wyatt and wife visited a few' days in Philomath, but have returned to Goble. Mr. John Webster, who has been at Portland for several weeks, re turned Saturday. - Mrs. Mason, of Corvallis, viBited over Sunday with her mother. Revival services at Keezel chapel closed Sunday night. Walter Rugg, who had his arm broken coasting down hill in the snow, has returned to school. Mr. Robert Gellatly bad a runa way on Main street, Saturday, re sulting in slight damage to the buggy. Mrs. White, Profeeeor of Music at Philomath College, suffered last week with a severe attack of tonsil itis. Mr. Merrill wa9 io town last week in the interest of the Bell telephone Co. ,- ' . ' . Mrs. Walter Parker, of La Grand and Leslie Parker of Port land, are in Philomath a few days, visiting. At BeHfotratain. . Miss Abbie Purdy of Beaver Creek, is visiting friends in this vi cinity. Mrs. Dr. Hoggins, who scalded her foot recently and was confined to her room for ten days, is able to be out again. Will Cook of Eugene, is visiting H F Bristow'this week. T K Fawcett has purchased the J M Cameron property in Corvallis. Chancy Williams is yirriting his sister, Mrs. J Corbus, of this place. Frank Dinges is out from Alsea. He reports the roads in bad condi ioo although he thinks they have been worse. The joint installation of the offi cers of the W. O. W. and Circle, at this place on the 14th was well at tended and a pleasant time was en joyed by all present. V Mrs. Blakely of this place, has been quite sick the last two weeks, bat is improving. - Mr. Roper and familv late from Idaho have moved into W. 8. Hum phrey's house recently .vacated by Henry Lamb. George Boyd expects to move to Perin in a few days.
