LOCAL OPTION.
One of the. surprises of
the
late
election is the enactment by a ma
jority of about 3,000 of the local op
tion law. On account of the great
majority against state prohibition a
few years ago, there was general
doubt as to whether its friends
could muster sufficient votes to pass
the present measure! This is es
pecially true, as the provisions of
the law are" sweeping, going fully
as far in their regulations as the
most pronounced local optiomst
could have desired. This, the op
ponents of the measure urged as an
argument against it, and doubtless
with more or less effect,
In spite of it all, however, the
law has been declared for by a
majority of the people and it is
entirely crobable that in many if
not every county in the state the
question of whether or not the
liquor traffic shall be continued,
will be submitted to a vote in the
November election. This, is turn
means that in some of them, at
least, local prohibition will be adopt
ed, and that saloons in such will
have to go out of business. In
how many of the counties this re
sult will happen, remains to be
seen. This issue will cut a large
, figure in the November election
and it is probable, will almost over
shadow the issues in the presiden.

In Benton, the majority for the
adoption of the local option law is
380. The figures are probablv
double that by which the most ar4
dent local optionist hoped to carrji
the countv. They show a wide
change in public sentiment from the
conditions that prevailed in Benton
county a few years ago, and possi
bly indicate that the new sentiment
will directly find itself entrenched
in law and in fact. In any event,
there will be another battle of bal
lots, and perhaps a battle in the
courts, and in both there will be
fighting all long the line.
The adoption of the law

state is the most startling
event in many years.

IS IN QUARANTINE.
With Smallpox The Case is Very
Mild Patient is an Easterner.
Corvallis has a case of smallpox.
The ratient is Arthur Kroeniner.
I who arrived in Oregon from Wis
consin, six weeks aero. - He has
been in Corvallis a couple of weeks,
and has been employed both at
Strong's sawmill and with the con
struction gang of the Independent
Telephone Company. The case
was first noticed Thursday morning,
and the attention of the authorities
was at once called to the matter.
Kroening denied that he had the dis1
ease, claiming that it was eczema,
a SKin ailment to which he says he
is subject. Dr. Farra was called,
and in the first diagnosis, which
occured in the morning, the disease
was not sufficiently developed to
make certain that it was smallpox
Later in the day, after a second ex
amination, the case was pronounced
a very light form of smallpox.
A feature of the disease is that
Kroening does not complain of ill
ness, he has a good appetite, and
would be able to work, if permitted
to be at large.'
The case is thoroughly quaran
tined. Kroening occupies a small
house on the river bank north of
the sawmill, and just across the
road from the slaughter house. A
yellow flag at the spot gives warn
ing to passers-by of what is inside.
