' Has a Plan for Complete Organiza tion of the County School Svetem What It Is. - To the Editor: In challenging Mr. Denman to a great canvass, it was our aim to dis cuss openly and fairly the question of school BuperviaioD. We believe our people are vitally interested in oar public schools and should bave an opportnity to know what the ideas and plans of candidates for school superintendent are, touching tbe school question. 1 But Mr. Denman baa chosen to hide behiud the chairman of the re publican committee rather than en ter into a tree and lull .discussion of school management. As to our own position, we desire to bide nothing from the public. The vo ter should know the qualifications and the intended line of each can didate in order to be able to caBt his vote intelligently. It is there fore not inappropriate here that a few suggestions be made. "As the teacher so is the school" is a famil iar and undisputed maxim, it is equally true that as the superin tendent so is the teacher. City boards have long realized this and expert supervisors of school work are ia demand all over the country as city superintendents. If experi enced and technical school know! edge are so essential in a city su perintendent, how much more ne ceseary are these qualifications in a superintendent of country schools in which so many young inexperi enced persons are annually taking up tbe vocation of teaching, bhould not tbe superintendent be able 10 take charge of classes in the school rooms of these beginners and by expert demonstration help such teachers to overcome whatever diffi culties may be confronting them? A little wise advice, a timely sug ge. t on, or an intelligent demon stratum has saved many a teacher from fatal mistakes in the schocl room. A well organized system of grade or teachers meetings should exist, arranged so as to make it posBibla for each teacher to attend one of ' these classes every month Tbe annual institute does not reach far enough. Tbe superintendent should b? able to continue the in stitate in6tauctlon in tbe monthly meetings. This is the only success ful way to make good teachers and helf them up to the highest stand ard of work. " The county should be divided irt districts, each section to hold lo al contests in all lines of school wi ik, a county contest to be held annually in which successful com pet 'tors in the local trial ' would oui pete for county honors and prl ze.s There should be prizes for at ti letic contests as for literary work This system, thoroughly organized would result in the most intense in Ur-st among pupils and raise the standard of work to the highest point of efficiency. It is a matter of regret that Mf Denman has taken the questiona ble course that be' has, thus depriv ing the publio of the opportunity to more thoroughly understand the scoool system in all its phases.
