ALMOST BRAINS I ANOTHER
CONVICT AT OREGON ;
PENITENTIARY
Both Convicts Are Serving Life
Sentence for Murder Is Struck
on the Head With a Dull
i Axe Other News.
Salem, April 30. Addieon Kidd
struck Lewis Warren over the head
with an axe at the state prison this
morning. Both men are, convicts.
Though bis skull is badly fractured
it is believed that Warren will re
cover, for be did not lose con
sciousness. It is believed ' that
the act was committed in a fit of
temporary insanity. Both meu are
serving life sentences for murder.
About 11 o clock this lorenoon a
number of convicts were gathering
in the laundry building, in the rear
of the prison, Kidd and Warren a'
mong them. Warren was sealed on
a low stool when Kidd entered, and
half a dozen other convicts were
standing around. Without saying
a word or giving any warning of his
intentions, Kidd picked up an axe
that Jay near the door, and lifting
it above his head, brought the
blade down upon the head qf War
ren. The axe was dull and was not
given a heavy swing or it would
have split Warren's bead wide
open. '
in an instant John McMahan,
also a life-timer, sprang upon Kidd
to 3ubdue him. Though McMahan
iB regarded as the most powerful
man in the prison, Kidd swung
him around like a child and would
have broken loose but for the
prompt assistance of the other con
victs, who also grappled with Kidd.
It was all that six men could do
to hold Kidd and tie his hands and
feet with rows. He was carried to
a cell and locked up.
,To all appearance he is in his u
sual mind except that he tilks
rather incoherently. He disclaims
all knowledge of any injury that
has been done to Warren.
ividd was received at the prison
in February, 1902, from Wasco
county. " He placed an obstruction
on the railroad track, thus derailing
a train and causing & death, for
which he was convicted of murder
in the second degree and sentenced
to life imprisonment. Until, a year
ago he was sullen - and stubborn,
though committing no serious in
fractions of the rules. During the
last year he has been quiet and o
bedient,, the change being so pro
nounced as to be remarked bj pris
on officials. Recently he has talk
ed with Superintendent James about
the possibility of his release, acd
brotched the subject this morning,
wb-n. he seemed in his usual ; men
tal condition. .
J mes Warren was received at
the orison in January, 1901, on a
conviction of murder committed on
bi ad a ship lying in Portland har
bor. He and Kidd have been ' the
be t of friends since they have been
together in prison and no reason
caw be assigned by either Warren
or fie prison ; officials why Kidd
should attempt to take his life.

I am so hflDuv and so triad " '
. I do not no w feel blue and tad
I laugh and talk and take my ease
I come and go just as I please
I tell you what I sold my home
When I listed it with. Wnlte & Stone.
I was feeling very blue and sad
My wife Bhe made me almost mad
Sbe did not want on the farm to stay
Bhe wanted to sell it and move away ,
So I listed it for more than a year
And still I found myself right here. .
The agents they took my place in hand
They were so sure they could sell the land
I sometimes think they did not try
For tbey never brought a man to buy.
They gave a wink with a knowing amile -And
rled to fool me all the while.
With that knowing smile and wink
Thay could not fool me don't you think
I saw they would not sell my home
So I listed it with White & Stone
You bet I found them just and true
They will do your work all right for you.
They will always help if they can
They deal with you as man with man.
They are always ready with good advice
And they are uot afraid to advertise
So if you would buy or sell a home
J ust have a talk with White & Stone.
