Gorvallis Times. Ofllelal Paper of Benton Uraatr- OOBTAIXI8, OBEOOIT, APB1X. 2, MM. TODAYS CONVENTION. Ken who Will sit as Delejrtes Con venes in Court House at Ewven , ' The county convention of Benton democrats is to convene in the court house at 1 1 today. It promises to "begone of the old time gatherings of the unterrified. The list of delega tes includes names of men of busi ness who have not been prominent in party councils for years. Some of them are in a Benton convention for the first time. All were elected at primaries held throughout the tounty last Tuesday. The attendence of voters in the four Corvallis precincts was very light, due to the fact that there is no rivalry so far as known for pla ces on the ticket. The pre-eminent fitness of some of the men now in office for re-election for the places they are filling, and the well known custom of Benton county people to reward faithful men by a re-election seems to make it a generally accep ted belief that several present en cumbents will be re-nominated. In the cases of other places on the tick--et, the acknowledged majority of the opposition makes men chary of hunting a nomination and rather ' leads all to allow the office to ; seek the man. These facts led to open primaries with no contests for places as delegates interested in se curing the nomination of particular candidates. " It is supposed that similar conditions prevailed at all the voting places in the county. The list of delegates is as follows: Corvallis number I A. B. Alex ander, George Dixon, J A Gilkey, A,R Locke, Charles McHenry, John Smith, V E Watters, and Al bert Wilson. Corvallis number 2 Horace ' Locke, Robert Johnson, C L Heck ert, WS McFadden. The congressional delegates are understood to be for L. R. Harris of Lane, and are, W. S. Tomlinson. E. R. Bryson, Geo. Lilly, Marion Hayden, J. R. Smith, C. V. Johnson," and Ed Williams. A list of delegates in. the interest of Hermann was . placed before the convention, but the vote against them was decisive. , There- were contests for the offices of senator, representative and assessor, 'but all the other places were filled by ac clamation. .... The delegates to the state convention, offered on a list already prepared, were " voted for by acclamation. Resolutions, ' of fered by the committee on resolu tions, commended the administra tion ot President Roosevelt, took the county court to task with ref erence to road building and . de nounced that body for dispensing with the services of a road master. The com mittee on permanent organization recommended that the temporary officers be made permanent, and the report was adopted. Virgil Carter was chosen assistant secre tary. The following order of busi ness was reported by the committee,- and adopted: election - of dele gates to congressional convention; election of delegates to state con vention; -nomination of county ticket in following order,' senator, representative;- sheriff, clerk, re corder, assessor, treasurer, school superintendent, commissioner, sur-i veyor, coroiigf; - After electing.the delegates to the congressional convention a list of seven delegates to the state con vention was placed in nomination and elected by acclamation. An incident of the representative nomination twas the naming of Marion Hayden for the place. , Af ter his name was placed before the convention, he made a brief - speech declining the proffered honor, tak ing occasion to refer to his record A liberal applause was V what the convention gave him as solace for its well known refusal to 'consider his candidacy for a renomination tor the place. - ' For sheriff, M. S. Woodcock said that for a long time his party had been leading a forlorn hope and that J. M. Cameron - seemed ta be the logical candidate for the place. Car ter of Soap Creek seconded the nom ination and Mr. Cameron was pla ced on the ticket by acclamation. ' For clerk, E. R. Bryson named R. W. Scott of Beaver Creek, ' and G. A.
