: The latter company it will be re
nembered, bought the Coe lands of
the Coast Land Livestock Com
pany about a year ago,, -and subse--quentlyr,
defaulted in its payments.
The Coast . Land & Livestock Com
iany forclosed the mortgage on the,
1 ands, the property was advertised
and the day of. sale 'was . near at
iand. Then .the, Oregon-Pacific
Colonization : Company got out a
temporary injunction, restraimg
"the sale alleging that the service
was invalid. The case was
"heard at an adjourned term of the
circuit court held in Corvallis by
-Judge Hamilton July 20th and the
matter was taken under advisement.
-i In this decision Judge Hamilton
finds for the Coast Land & .: Live
stock Company,- and orders, the
temporary injunction . . dissolved
It is supposed that, inj :due time.
.the sale of the- lands under fore
closured will . proceed. The ...judg

etery.' The funeral occurred from
the family home at two o'clock
"Wednesday -afternoon. So many
attended that the halls and parlors

Dr. Thompson who was the offi

and the. opening number was the
; chanting of the Lord's prayer. Rev.

.of the dead and spoke words of

prayer by Dr. Thompson and

up their own medicines. We ad-,
vise you to go slow and. try, and
compromise the case, if, it is not
too late. ' : - .

There is no date after the word
Philomath in the date line, at the
head of the missive. The writing
is in lead pencil, and in the printed
Roman letters to which anonymous
correspondents always resort, as a
means of disguising their own chi
rograph y, The address on the en
velope is in the same characters,
and the postmark is . ' "Philomath,
'August 1 8th." ' s
Mr. Davis does not " know' what
case it is to which the correspond
ent refers. He has been 4 xn Cor
vallis all week as an attorney in the
land cases before ' County Clerk
Moses.. He was to have appeared
as aa witness iaa a Philomath. vcity
case, but he is at a loss in each in
stance to find a reason for the
threatening attitude of the un
known writer. ?"

hunt for the scribbler, It is a crim
inal offense to send a threateninglet

One of the" Earliest Residents of Cor-,
vallis Laid to Rest. '
Joshua Mason, one of the earl
iest residents of Corvallis, was bur
ied in Odd Fellows cemetery Thurs
day afternoon. He was almost a
continuous resident of this, city for
nearly fifty , years. ' ' Mrs. ; Martha
Avery, Mrs. Mary Stewart and E.
Holgate are said to; be the1' only
present surviving residents whose
coming antedates that ' of the de
ceased. ' Mr. Mason arrived in the
town in March, 1 854 His death
occurred, after ar lingering illness
at six o'clock Thursday-; afternoon.
The service was; conducted by Rev.
VV C.. Kantner, witn wnom tne ae
ceased had been an intimate . friend
for more than 27years. '
The birth olace and home in the
early part of his life was in Preble
county, Ohio. At the age of 11
years, he went with .his parents to

grew to manhood.; At the age - of
18, he learned tne carpenter, trade.
In 1 853, be emigrated to ! Oregon
with the first United Brethren col

ise -E. Cook,, of Oakland; Mrs.

ren Ma-on, San Francisco; and
Edna. Hershner. Corvallis. After
lour years he was married to Miss
Phoebe A. Kisor, who still survives.
Two children were.born as, Chester
O. and Lowell Wayman, both, of

Mr. Mason was a member, of a
family of 14 children,; all of whom
have preceded, him to' the grave ex
cept one sister, Mrs; J.-G. - McCor
mick of Brownsville, Oregon, who

In order to burry the dead a prop
er certificate of death !; is required
by law. , A similar fine is imposed
for neglect to observe " this regula
tion. ' " All cases of death must be
reported to the health officer with
in d.8 hours. So must all cases of
infectious disease. ; The regula
tions are the enacted law of the late
legislature, and they go into i effect
now;' because it was not until Wed
nesday that the blanks -! for v phy
sicians, ;. undertakers, health offi
cers and others were received. The
necessary blanks are now in the
hands " Of the county! judge,
and can be secured on appli
cation. The section of the
law covering the above cases is as
follows:
. "It shall be' ths duty of every
physician, midwife, or head of a
family, under whose "charge 'any
birth occurs, to report the same to
the county or city , health officer,
as the case may be, before the
last day of the month in which said
birth occurs. ; Every physician
midwife, nursei or head of the fam
ily, under whose, charge any death
occurs, must report the same to the
counuy ' or city health officer, "with
in ,forty;eight hours," or as soon
after as practicable. 5 Every physi
cian, or, other person under whose
charge, any infectious or " epidem
ic " disease occurs,1; : must ' re
port the same to the county or city
health officer immediately. Any un
dertaker, or head of the family, or
other person shall not bury, cre
mate, pr cause to be cremated or
buried, the body of any person till
the deaths certificate is properly
filled out and sent to the " health
officer of the county or city in which
said burial or cremation is to occur.
It shall be unlawful for the . trans
portation of the remains' of any
person having died! the cause of
death being directlyl of indirectly
due.to any .infectious disease, ex
cept as the State Board of Health
may direct.- Any person violating
any section of this act, or any part
thereof, shall ,be guillfy;; of misde
meanor, and be fined not less than
ten dollars fSiol nor more than one
