THE ASSESSMENT A. LONG LIST OJr CHAKGES MADE . IN THIS IEAK3 ROLLists: Some Valuation Raised, Some Low ered and Other Alterations The Court Made- Them C Increase in Benton's - ' Total Valuation. The overhauling of the assess meat roll of Benton County has just been completed by the Com missioners conrt, and the work is embodied in a long order made of record last week. For a long time, it seeaas, many errors in description of property h&ye been copied from one roll to another each succeeding year until the iooks were not in a satisfactory condition. To find and correct many of these errors, involved a vast amount of research and labor, and the detection of many was im possible without the use of a set of abstracts. At the September term of court, the judge and commission ers acdepted the present roll,, after the County Board of Equalization iad not yet csncluded its work, and at once began a systematic process of correction. In the mat ter, Assessor Bush co operated, paying for the expense of checking the rolls with the preseai owners "books. The roll is now pratically correct as to all dedescriptions sand " in that respect will -stand the test, of any court, a fact not true of an assessment roll made in any county in the state perhaps, in several yearev In many other ways, the assessment -work has been so perfected, that future arolls will be comparatively easy to malce reliable and correct. - In the changes, about ,$30,000 has been added to the total valuation of all property in the county. I A vast amount of clerical labor was done by County Clerk Moses and County Judge Watters in the -process of overhauling. J H Gib son was employed as one of the experts in the case and his ab stracts were used. The order of the court in part is: In the matter of examination aud ; correction of the tax roll for the years 1002, it is ordered that the assessments of the following named persons, be and and the same are hereby changed to- conform to the. corrections made thereon on the tax roll in red ' ink. HIS APPOINTMENTS GOVERNOR ELECT . CHAMBERLAIN HAS MANY APPLICATIONS FOR '-'PLACES. ' - Bat the4 Loaves Are Few Men who Want to Be Superintendent of the Penitentiary- Also. Private Secretary Al- , bo State , Land Agent. Portland .Oregonian: - The time - is fast approaching when Ceorge E. Chamberlain, as gover nor of the state of Oregon, will hand out a number of appointments to loyal democrats who have shown themselves in public or private life to be worthy of public trust. Not air who are worthy will receive ap pointments, for the number of pla ces to be filled by the eovernor is exceedingly small.- Nor will all the loyal be rewarded, for as it is well known, the democrats were all Chamberlain democrats, both be fore and after the convention. In this respect the new governor .will have an advantage, for. no man can claim credit for having been the "de cided factor in securing: the . nomi nation for Mr. Chamberlain. : It was a nomination which no other democrat wanted, for probably no other democrat could have been e- lected. Since all were loyal Cham berlain men. thfr new governor has only the duty of selecting ,his ap pointees r from among the list of candidates., .having xegard for their fitness for the Bmoa. Mr. Chamberlain is ot giving out any tips as So ibis sntentioas in making appointments, and, in fact. it is doubtful if he has made up his mind upon a single man "who will be invited to partake of the fruit which falls fromThe democratic tree. ' The district attorney, who is already being called: governor, says he will not make any announce' ments until lie has been inaugural ed, nor will he now indicate who may be. the fortunate candidates. The truth is that more can be learn ed about what the governor is like ly to; do by listening to the talk of democratic politicians than by talk ing with Mr. Chamberlain himself. f the governor knows, he won't tell. Ever since the June election the superintendence of thepenitentiary has been a subject of considerable peculation. The position pays on ly $1500 a year, but as the super intendent is also provided house rent, provisions and fuel,; the place is more desirable tha n would at first appear. It ia at least attract ive enough to bring out half a dozen candidates. . Frank Diirbin and W H Downing, both of Marion - coun ty, have been considered the lead ing candidates, but the fact that neither of them can get the indorse-, ment of a considerable majority -of the democrats of the county leads many to think that neither will suc ceed in his ambition. Some of Mr. Chamberlain's friendB, it is said, are advising him that if the demo crats .up in Marion "cannot - agree upon one of the candidates he should hot be expected to ' make a Chicago, Dec. 16. Judge Elbert Gary chairman of the United Sta tes Steel Corporation, announced today the purchase of the L Union and Sharon - plants,, of the Union Steel Company, near Pittsburg, the transaction involved a 'bond issue of $4.5,000,000. . , '. ' ; r;-A - Judge Gray gave out a statement embodying the details of the trans action, in which he states that the properties ; purchased have wire, nail and other works in operation as goiog properties, and that when fully completed they will have five more blastfurnaces with a capacity to manufacture 7500 kegs of nails daily and new and ; modern . tuba mills, bar mills, . tin mills. - sheet mills, rjlate mills, etc. " They also have about 5ooo acres of cooking coal in the Connellsville region, besides terminal toads ia the . coke region, 62oo acres of fuel coal on the Monohgahela Kiver, limestone prop erties and valuable developed ore mines in the Mesaba region, and Marquette region, containing about 4o,ooo,ooo tons of ore, two lake steamers and steel railroad cars1 i! " The situation is ' now more critical than it has been since the trouble began. - " ? Washington, Dec. 16. The Ven ezuelan question occupied the at tention of the senate in executive session today for almost an hour. The question same up informally almost immediately after the doors "were closed. Senator Teller dis claiming ail intention of being crit ical and saying he merely-desired information, asked Senator Cullom. iGhairman of the committee on for eign relations, what information he possessed as to the Venezuelan affair.- Mr. Teller said that the situ ation was such - that senators felt that the Monroe doctrine at any time might become involved if the complication should continue. . Senator Cullom replied to the in quiry that he had no , knowledge of recent events not contained in. the House prints. Messrs. Bacon, Hoar, Lodge and Stewart all made remarks. In none of the addressses was - there: any thing harsh or critical said. : The tone of alt the speeches, whether by republicans or democrats, was that the attHude of this nation should be . one of watchfulness. There was a general - agreement that i while the means adopted by Great .Britain and Germany for their debts had been quite strenuous, they thus far had committed no in fringement of the Monroe doctrine and therefore had done nothing to which the United btates could take exception. - ' selection'": as between" the" two Both are generally conceded, to be competent men for the place, but if the governor finds . a competent man where "there is no lccal fight on he may think, best to leave the Marion county men to fight it out. If an agreement could be reached up in Marion that county would very likely get the superintendency and may anyway), for'Marion was one of the banner counties in' the dem ocratic victory. Among other can-, didates for the head office ofL'ha penitentiary are: T. G.. Hailey,- of Pendleton, who Has the backing of another of the banner democratic countree. A;'" iJouthit, editor'-of the . Timet-Mountaineer, of The Dalles, and George E, Hammers ley, of Gold Hillr who claims the support of the Southern Oregon con tingent.
