Bears the J The Kind Von Have Always .oagr FOUR GIRLS DROWNED NONE COULD SWIM, ONE WENT BEYOND HER DEAPTH. They Were in Bathing in Pierce Pond A Man Locked in a iBax for Fifteen Days The I Great Corn Crop Will ' s Bring Cheaper Meat. ' Four girls were drowned Wed nesday morning in Pierce Pond, two miles west of the village of Pawling, N. Y. They were, Anna Beach, Susie Baach, Eatella Dun can and Martha Duncan. The girls were in a blackberrying party tbat left their homes in Paw ling at 9 o'clock a. m. Robert Slo cum and his wife and their 14- yearold daughter were with them. At 10 o'clock they were near Pierce Pond, and the girls all wanted to go bathing. . "How many of you can swim?" asked Mr. Slocum. "None of us; but we won't go in far," said the youngest girl. Mr. Slocum warned them all to keep ! away from the pond, which known 10 be very deep and whose depth slorjes abruptly near the shore.;. But, the morning was hot and the water! of the pond cool, and the girls persisted in their plan. Mr oiocuni a little gin was very anx ious to go with them, but her fath er would not allow her to do so Estella Duncan sat on the bank and took care of the clothing of the other three girls. - They laughed, aod danced and splashed one anoth er witn water. iney neld one another's hands and went in deeper and dteper. Ihen Martha Duncan pushed on a little ahead of the oth ers. She suddenly found that she was beyond her depth and began to scream for help. The Beach girls caught her by the arms, and her weight dragged them- down the sloping ground into deeper water. Estella Duncan, fully clothed, ran down the bank and out into the pond. She could not swim a stroke, but she bravely caught the arm neaiest to her and tried to pull the girls toward shore. She had neither the strength nor the skill to do this, and she sank with them. Mrs. Sarah Turner, a neighbor, hearing the screams of the girls, ran to the pond. She tore a long branch off a tree and thrust it out toward the group, but the girls either could not see the branch or were too panic stricken to know what to do. - Mrs. Turner cannot swim, so she was forced to stand helpless on the brink of the pond and see the girls drown . When the last of them had vanished Mrs. Turner ran to a summer boarding house near by and called for help. Alfred S. Cole and a stranger, a summer boarder, 'found the bodies in twelve feet of water. New York World: Thomas Don ohue, thirty years old, who said he had no home- or occupation, was found Wednesday half dead from starvation On pier 17 North River. He wa3 so emaciated that he did not weigh, it is said, more than" 60 pounds. He was taken to Hudson Street Hospital. He had been lock ed in a box for fifteen days, he said. The box in which Donohue was found was a big one used for keep ing sawdust. Late last night the watchman on the pier went to the box to get some sawdust to sprinkle the pier. He pried open the heavy lid and was startled to hear a feeble groan coming from the interior., The watchman procured a light. There, lying near the front of the box, was a man. He was moaning feebly and appeared to be clutching up ward as though vainly endeavoring to open the box. Donohue was lifted from his strange resting place and carried to the end of the pier. A call was sent in an ambulance from Hudson Street Hospital was soon there. The surgeon diagnosed the case as inanition and said that his con dition was 6erious. How he got in the box is not known. Chicago, Aug. 26. Secretary Wilson's statement that the big corn crop will reduce the prices of cattle and hogs is corroborated by the packers. An era of cheaper prices of meat is in sight, but scarce ly inside of three months. "It will.be three months before the corn crop is gathered," said Ar thur Meeker, of Armour & Co., to day, "and from that time on . we may look for lower prices for cattle and hog3 unless the prevailirg scarcity continues after the feed is cheaper. But the corn crop' still has early frosts and ether blights to encounter, though practically I believe it is assured." Cattle and hogs are still at top prices. Within ten days hogs have advanced sixty cents a hundred and cattle five cents a hundred pounds. A Communication. Me. Editor Allow me t6 speak a few words in favor of Chamber lain's Cough Remedy. I suffered iain s uougn 4emeay. l sunerea for three years with the bronchitis and could not sleep at nights. New York World: John Mitchell, President of the United Mine Work ers, in answer to questions put to ia i him at Wilkesbarre by long dis tance telephone, made the following statement Wednesday: "I have no formal reply to make to the statements of Mr. Morgan or the coal presidents. "The strike will go on indefinite ly, in spite of air that is said and done, until the men are awarded their just demands. "I deny -the statement af ' Mr. Baer that the men are going back to work in groups throughout the region. 1 here are isolated cases of defection here and there among the mine helpers, but the licensed mm ers are houldingout firmly. It will do the operators little good to have their mines full of engineers, pump men, machinists and helpers, if the only men licensed by the state to mine coal remain on strike. - Our present plans will hold good. We contemplate no new movements. The men will simply remain on stiike and the mines will stay idle until their demands are granted or the operators con sent to arbitration. , The Btrikers can hold out all winter. We are providing for that. At present we are relieving every case of distress and we will be able to take care of every one in need as long as this strike lasts. "Onr union has pledged itself to the preservation of order and I an ticipate no disorder. I do not care to say anything about Mr. Morgan's refusal to take hand in the settlement of the strike. I will only say that the de velopments incident to the gather ing of the coal presidents yesterday have-not influenced the strikers in the least, and from our point of view have brought no change in the strike situation. John Westhafer, of Loogootee, Ind., is a poor man, but he says he would not be without Chamber lain's Pain Balm if it cost five dol lars a bottle, for it saved him from being a cripple.
