spondent from reasons unknown to
their families or friends, tired of
living and determined to die, Nanoa
Ungerman, night telephone oper-
ator at McMinnville, and her chum,
Mrs. Ollie Gaunt, a divorced wo
man, drank arsenic in deadly quan
tities in the telephone office last
night, both succumbing today to
the effects of the poison. Miss Un
german called up several operators
along the telephone line and told ,

tired ofr living and were taking the
ppispja at the time the message was
sent." The grim announcement was
not beSeved and those who- received
the message thought the McMlnn-
vilie central was indulging in chatt
ing over the wire '
.; Both were prominent and popular
young women, from the leading
families of the town, and had pleas-;
ant homes and, so far as is known,
no reason existed for their untimely
self-destruction. Mre, Gaunt - had
been separated from her husband
for several months, but none of .her
friends suspected that her domestic
troubles weighed sufficiently heavy
on her - mind ' to cause her to con
template suicide,
The poison was taken about half
past 8 o'clock last night. Miss Un
germarn bad been acting as night,
operator in the telephone office. She
wai accompanied to her . work by
Mrs. Giiint, and both seemed to be
in the best spirits when Mr. Hem-
hreeV'ine proprietor of the store in
which the telephone office is situ
ated, left his establishmeht early in
the evening. Mr. Hembree returned
to his sfore about 9 o'clock, and
found Mrs. Gaunt standing' in the
rear door of the building, ill. ' As
she became worse atV" once, a" phy

to the home of her step-father, T.

of Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Ungerman,
highly respected citizens of McMiun
viile. Mrs. Gaunt was the daughter
of .Mrs. T. .A. McCourt, of this city,
and was a general favorite. ' Mrs.
Gaunt formerly lived ' in Hillsboro,
where she was well known. '

unanimously adopted a resolution
declaring Rear Admiral Schley to
be the rightful hero of the battle of
Santiago and "entitled : to :the un
failing gratitude of. his country."
The resolution indorses the report
of Admiral Dewey in the Schley
Court of Inquiry, condemns the
majority report and extends a cor
dial invitation to Admiral Schley to
visit Jackson '
