SILENT, WHY?
lu.'te of the prevalence of trust
rices In this country, Mr McKiDley ;
uttered not one syllable in his letter '
of acceptance on the subject of the
trusts. The president knows that
during the past eighteen months
trusts have been organized in this
country with a capitalization of
over two billion dollars. Prices on
manufactured articles have been
advanced to an extent never known
before. The advance affects nearly
every article in use, from the steel
pen with which the mortgage is
signed to the coffin in which the
dead man is buried. There is no
evading, no escaping payment-of
these trust prices, for competition
has been strangled. There is no
other source of supply. The buyers
of trust goods are simply helpless.
There is no relief for them, save in
the disintegration of the trusts.
These buyers of trust goods have
no trust goods to sell. There is no
organized trust to advance the price
of oats, of wheat, of hops, of prunes;
no trust to advance the wages of
the farm hand, the blacksmith, the
Btore.clerk. The farmer sells his
products to the trusts at such prices
isthe trusts are willing to pay.
.. The trust sells to the farmer not at
what the farmer is willing or
ble to pay, but at whatever . the
trust sees 'fit to ask. Whether
"buying or eelling, the trust fixes
the price; in no case do the farmers
fix the price. Under such condi
tions, how can the farmer prosper?
What chance has he to get on in the
world.Ai4iLConditions so far
led for them, how
help but prosper?
T8 no escaping these facts.
farmer himself knows them to
Whenever he buys rails,
fre, paint, window glass or al-
ost any other article required, the
ipieasant truth is brought home
i him. Why, then, is President
linley silent about the trusts?
does he harp about a financial
when there ia ha power
that can for' the next
je present financial
arrangemeirn-iwe me preaiaeni s
party?. The silence-simply means
that trusts are for the president and
the president is for the trusts, and
it is pure folly to deny it, or to
attempt to believe anything else.
Both tiuilty.
Frank Baker and Burt 3riffith,
the two Lincoln county prisoner
who recently occupied cells in the
Benton county jail are both to go to
the penitentiary. They had their
trial before Judge Hamilton at
Toledo, Wednesday, and the jury
promptly returned a verdict of
guilty as charged, jointly indicted
with them was William Griffith a
brother of Burt Griffith. The in
dictment charged them with lar
ceny. It appears that for several .years
past cattle stealing and other dep
redations have been . prevalent in
the vicinity of Drift Creek. The
neighborhood has suffered much
irom the operations ef th gang,
which was a sort of Jesse James
variety. The events in the Toledo
court show that Baker and Griffith
were the guilty parties. Judge
Hamilton was to have sentenced
the defe ndants. Thursday. It was
guessed that each would be sent up
for about .five years. Both have
formerly served out sentences in the
penitentiary.
Again in Business
To all those who so generously
aided us by their labor and means
in replacing our buildings that were
destroyed by fire on May iwenty
sixth, allow us to extend our sincere
thanks not only for your kindly as
fiistance but for the friendship and
generous heart that prompted it,
and only hope some time in the
future we may be able to show our
appreciation for your kindness.
After two months" of hard labor
we -are once more at our old stand
in a new building with a full stock
of new first-class goods. Allow me
to thank my customers for their
patronage in the past and hope by
square dealing and first-class goods
to merit a continuation of the same
in the future, again thanking you,
we-are Yours .to serve.
