SOMETHING TO England is busy
ARGUE ABOUT with a discussioin
in which those who belive in com
munication with the spirits of the
dead are oh the defensive. The dis
cusion arose from the question:
Why did not the spirit of William
T. Stead send word of the death of
Captain Robert P. Scott? ,
Everybody knows that Mr. Stead,
who went down with the Titanic, was
a firm believer in this spirit communi
cation and that he had promised that
after his own death he would com
municate with this world through me
diums. Now, the antarctic tragedy happen
ed several months before Mr. Stead's
death. And those who do not be
lieve in spirit communication are ask
ing the believers why Stead in spirit
land did not let this world know about
Scott's death.

E SHOULD ALL LIVE TO
ONLY AVOID FRICTION.
LOSS OF VITALITY, OF
LESS SCRAPING OF BODY AND MIND AGAINST THEIR
ENVIRONMENTS. AND TO A LACK OF SLEEP, THE RIGHT KIND
OF SLEEP, IS DUE THE MOST OF OUR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL
FRICTION AND THEREFORE OF OUR PREMATURE AGING.
Every person should sleep calmly, dreamlessly, for a full eight
hours out of the twenty-four. If he does this it means that during
one-third of life consciousness is suspended in short, he is NOT
LIVING IN THE SENSE OF EXPENDING VITALITY. And
then we are given a perfectly simple little mathematical problem. If,
all told, the years of such a man's life number one hundred, then
when he celebrates his hundredth birthday he is NOT REALLY
A DAY OLDER. THAN SIXTY-SIX AND TWO-THIRDS
YEARS. That is the actual term of his active life, and no one con
siders that decrepitude.
You must not only sleep eight hours, but you must WAKE
FROM SLEEP WITH A LAUGH That not merely makes you
feel youthful and happy, but if you laugh at yourself so early in the
day you are sure to get ahead of anybody else. '
.1 believe that a BEAUTIFUL AND YOUTHFUL MINT) IS
ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL TO rA BEAUTIFUL AND
HEALTHY BODY." A really intelligent person will want to be in
good physical condition and will be sensible enough to TAKE CARE
OF HIS BODY. '

Of course, it is a discussion that
gets nowhere. But the question is
one that never loses interest.
Ohio proposes to appoint a com

school children. What foolishness!
The passing of laws will not reform
human nature.
California, confronted by legislation

M. J. Lee, who was in this city
Tuesday, says that A. R. Cummings
and sons, who own one of the finest
places rear Canby, are now shipping
about 75 boxes of rhubarb a day.
Most of this is being sent to Port
land and Seattle, and is bringing the
highest- prices. The cut from 5
day. Mr. Lee . says that the present
yield of 75 boxes a day will not long
continue, and will probably fall
down to 60 boxes in a short time.
Canby is not favored any; more
than the rest of Clackamas' county
this year in having its crops ad
vanced by fine sunshine. Mr. Lee
says that the cold rains and general
ly chilly weather have held the
trees back so that they are just now
coming into blossom. This is re
