WHY NOT DECORATE
Have you seen what St. John's fig
ures on doing during the Elksl. con
vention, week of July 8?, It would
be a wise idea to have some extra in
ducements on during that week to en
tertain the visitors who come here.
The Elks Lodge and the publicity de
partment are working hand in hand
on this matter, but the business men
of the city should enter into the spirit
.of the work, decorate their places of
business with Elks colors and in the
end show their loyalty to the Amer
ican flag.
BOASTING, NOT BOOSTING
Camas, Washington, claims in its
publicity literature to have one of the
largest paper mills of the world and
to have a 200 ton plant Their stand
ing in the paper trade is 120 tons in
24 hours, and while some day there
will be a new machine producing 60
tons, the total will then be only 180
tons while one of the three mills in
Oregon City is now producing 210 to
215 tons in 24 hours, and there are 2
others a total of 270 to 275 tons.
When advertising the west correct
data only should be used. If the
truth is told we have sufficient to in
duce others to come and be one of us,
It Is Essential That the United
States Always Keep Pre
pared For War
By Major General JOHN P. O'RYAN, Head of the New York
National Guard
CHE charge of militarism usually made against the regular. who
preaches preparedness for war will not lie against the na
tional guardsman. Realization of the country's unprepared
ness for war accounts for these men's devotion to military
service.
National guardsmen know wars are not brought about by the
hasty anger of potentates or by the overt acts that signal their open
declaration, but largely by ECONOMIC OR RACIAL CAUSES
OR COMMERCIAL AMBITIONS. The history of the past twelve
years shows that war never was more easily resorted to, never more
inevitable, despite the widespread talk of peace.
ARBITRATION OF DIFFERENCES WILL PREVENT USE OF THE
MAILED FIST UP TO A CERTAIN POINT, BOTH WITH NATIONS
AND INDIVIDUALS, BUT IN SUPPORTING A SACRED RIGHT A
LIMIT IS INVARIABLY REACHED WHERE ANY MAN OR NATION
WILL STRIP FOR FIGHT AND RESORT TO ANY FORCE, EVEN TO
MURDER. , . " - . .
but boasting of " something we cannot
prove does more harm than good.
Honesty is the best policy in adver
tising as in other business.
FARES ON THE INTERURBAN '
The Committees of the fourClacka
mas County Commercial clubs are be
coming anxious about the matter put
up to the Portland Railway, Light &
Power Company about a month ago.
Arrangements have been made for
the final meeting with the company's,
officers on Tuesday, evening, June 25,
in Portland and it is hoped that the
matter will be satisfactorily settled
out of court.
Whether the Republican National
convention selects our Colonel Teddy
for the standard bearer, or-Bomeone
else, he will no doubt be delighted to
run on a -ticket of his own, selected
at his own convention. Considering
the way our political game is being
played this season, it might not make
any difference whether we have two
Republican tickets or even more, for
it is foolishness of this type which
will give the Democrats their inning
and many good Republicans are now
expressing their dissatisfaction at the
turn of affairs.
Some mid-December weather got
lost and just returned home Wednes
day evening, saluting our good folks
on arrival. With a continuance of
rain and cold weather those using
water power will, surely have a fine
year. Another evidence "that it is an
ill wind that blows no body good."
So Tacoma is to copy after Portland
in its coming festival. We hope they
wont hand out the same kind of
weather to the unsuspecting visiting
public, although in every other part
of the game Portland showed good
form, especially when the rose is tak
en into consideration.
ARE TO BE ELECTED
Officers will be elected at the an
nual meeting of the McLoughlin Mem
orial Association to be held at the
McLoughlin home at 7:30 o'clock next
Saturday evening. All members are
urged to be in attendance, as matters
of vital importance to the association
will be considered. It is probable
that niembers of the Woman's Club,
who aided in preserving the historic
home and in beautifying the grounds
will have many suggestions to offer.
E. G. Caufield is president of the as
sociation and J. E. Hedges Secretary
