JUDICIAL CONTEMPT OF PEOPLE.
., For the past ten or fifteen years at
, least the 8npreme Court of Ohio has
been trying to acquire a reputation
. equal ta that of the Supreme Court of
Penasylraala as a faithful aerrant of
, monopolistic corporations.' When
, Attorney-General Monnett started a
Somber of suits sgainst the Standard
Oil Company and similar monopolies?
he found that the merits of his case
cut Tery little figure with that court
Later, when Tom L. Johnson started
his fight for three-cent fares and for
equal taxation of railroad and street
. railway property, he found that the
Judges of the Ohio Supreme Court
could not bae been more partial to
these corporations If they had been
openly retained as attorneys for
them. In order to protect monopolis
tic interests, they eren rendered a
decision orerturnlng the gpTernment

Surprising then to hear of the latest

v There is a vigorous campaign being
carried oa la Ohio tor the laltlatlv e
and Referendum, and It looks bow m
though there win be an overwhelm
ing popular vote In favor of these
measures. The interest are clearly
alarmed. So when a question waa
brought before the Supreme Court
relallag to a law requiring physicians
to make certain report, that auguat
body aaw fit to render declaloa
nullifying this law In such a way as
to give it an excuse to utter some Ir
relevant aide remarks that might be
construed s bearing oa the' Initiative

clared the act void, not oa account
of any unconstitutional feature, but
because It wss said to be contrary
to the ordinance of 1T8T and then
went on to Intimate that there were
things la that ordinance which would
Invalidate a pure democracy and that
since it ante-dated the Constitution,
nothing could be put In the Consti

the court holds that the states formed

ALL ESTIMATES OF
HOP YIELD TOO HIGH
Every day's picking of hops In the
Willamette . Valley and In Washing
ton prores more disappointing to
growers as well ss dealers. None Is
now estimating the local crop above
70.000 bales compared with 90,000
and even up to 95,000 estimated two
weeks ago. . The crop In Washington
Is coming down so much lighter than
expected in the Western section that
all are now estlmallng20,000 "bales
for the state compared with a crop
of 22,000 bales a year ago. and esti
mates of two weeks ago of 23,000
bales for 1911.
It has been noted that the better
class yards In the Willamette Valley
are outing- down about SO per cent
leas than expected, while the poorer
yards have fallen fully one-half from
earlier estimates
No business In the hop market Is
reported and the reason cannot really
be eald to .be opened as yet The
nominal business shown last week
wss scarcely an Indication of what
the market will do as soon as pick
ing Is over and the full extent of the
shortage Is apparent
- No business Is reported at Wash
ington hop centers because growers
there are busy with their picking and
do not want to sell. Harvest opera
tion!, both In this state snd in Waab-
Ijngton, will likely be concluded with
in toe next seven days.
A rather firm market is noted for
hops st Sacramento. It ia stated tbst
35c a pound has been bid there with
growers not Included to offer st that
figure.
In New Tork state some buatneaa
ia reported passing at 50c a pound
and It Is expected that the very light
crop there will be cleaned op within
a short time.
While European hop markets sre
firm trade U quiet Buyers on the
other side are awaiting' more definite
returns from the crop here as well
aa samples to see the quality. -

SOLIDIFIED gasoline as a substitute for liquid gasoline t commanding
the attention of London experts. The sccouipsnytng Illustration show
on of the Jellylike block suspended oa a fork. It Is rUilmed that the
solidified gaaollne la more convenient for automobiles than liquid gaso
line. The manufacture Is explained thus: Th gasoline Is mixed with s small
amount of stearin which baa flrat been treated with hydrochloric acid. To this
Is added a mixture of methylated alcohol which haa first been treated with
sodium hydrate. The two liquids unite with ronsldersble energy, and after the
addition of water tb gelatinous mass result. It la claimed that the gasoline
so treated la far eater to handle than In the liquid condition, and no doubt this

grease. After exposure for three sad one-fourth hours In a laboratory the toe
by evaporation was given as about 44 per cent, but one woald think that this
rate la more than sufficient to be dangerous.
