LANDSEEKERS' RUSH
EXPECTED IN FALL
CHICAGO, Aug. 18. (Special).
Preparations are being made by West
ern railroads to handle an unprece
dented movement of landseekers to
Uhe Pacific Coast states this fall. Spec
ial colonist rates are in effect from
September 15 to October 15. These
rates are usually made twice a year.
in tbe spring and in tbe fall, and
range from $33 from Chicago to $25
from the Missouri River, for one-way
trips.
Durinr the colonist movement In
the spring nearly 90,000 people travel
ed to the Coast, according to est!
mates. Present prospects are that
the movement this fall will even ex
ceed that number.
WIFE, SUING, CALLS
HUSBAND JEALOUS
Nora Lewis ba filed a suit for di
vorce cgalnst Roy T. Lewis to whom
she was married October 26, 1906, in
Colorado. Mrs. Lewis alleges feather
husband Is of a Jealous disposition
and became angered if she even spoke
to another man. She asserts that he
annoys find latfcety aecu'CT herr-anit
constantly finds fault with her. When
ever she goes on the streets he thinks
It is to meet men, she alleges. They
lived In Portland for the past year,
and Mrs. Lewi say that her hus
band, when be returned borne, would
make a thorough examination of the
house to see If tbe window shades
had been changed. She says ha often
accused her falsely of Inviting men
to call at. ber apartment, during his
absence, and tht she could stand no
longer.
Mrs. Lewis' nam before marrying
waa Nora Brown, and this flame she
has asked to resume. Her attorney
Is O. E. Hayes.
NEW WELL AT STONE
The recent accident at tbe Stone
Oil well, which necessitated the aban
donment of that well, bas not dis
mayed th promoter of th enter
prise, and, at a meeting of stockhold
er held in this city Friday afternoon,
It was decided to start work at an
other place. The loss of a drill in the
well render It impossible to continue
tbe work there at a reasonable ex
pense, and It Is conaldered a better
plan to start tb driving of a new on.
Stockholder, who attended th meet
ing, were enthusiastlo over tb pros
pect of eventually obtaining a large
flow of both oil and gas, and each on
subscribed $25 to be used In continu
ing th work. A resolution appealing
to all stockholder to contribute a
like amount waa adopted, and there
is little question that the money nec
essary will be raised. Encouraging
flow of gas and oil have been en
countered, and there I every reason
to believe that with a little patience
both will b found in paying quanti
ties. All machinery necessary for tn
drilling of a new well Is on tb
ground, and It will cost bnt little to
mov It to another place. Mr. Harris,
who, has been la charge of the drill
ing, 'l so encouraged over th pros
pect that h ba agreed to tak one
fourth of hi salary In stock If th
new well Is sunk. H says tbe form
ations ar th same a those found in
th wells In California and Texas
where oil In amazing quantities baa
been found.
