' Practical assurance was given Fri day by tho County Court to the pub licity committee of the Oregon Cltr Commercial Club that permission would be given for the erection of a email building on tho southeast cor ner of the courthouse square- The construction will be without expense to the county, and the cost will be de frayed bv publicity funda. The esti mated cost of the building Is $500. It Is proposed to have' a small building. of pleasing architecture, about 20x30 feet, with 20 feet fronting on Main street, running back 30 feet on the Eighth street side of tho square. Nearly the entire building will be of glass, with only sufficient lumber to support the panes on four sides, and the structure will costaln exhibits of fruits, grains snd grasses from every section of Clsckamas county, and the office of the publicity secretary will be located there. Since the organization of the pub licity department -more tbar a year ago, the office of the secretary haa been on the fourth floor of the Ma sonic building, adjoining tbe rooms of the Commercial Club. Hundreds of strangers come to the city every month and tbey never see the exhib its of the county products and much of the effort put forward) by the pub licity departmient la lost. For some weeks the commlrwtra been look Ing about for a suitable site upon which to place a. building for exhibit purposes. The first Idea advancedJ was to construct a bnlldlnr on the Southern Pacific depot grounJa," als is I done In other Oregon towns, but the peculiar sltustlon of Oregon City made It apparent that people coming Into the city by electric car or steamer might not go to the depot It waa then suggested that the publicity building be located on the courthouse square and the matter waa presented to the county court thla afternoon by Chairman H. E. Cross, B. T. McBalo. O. D. Eby and Frank Busch, of the committee., with the result that the court agreed to co-operate aa far as possible, alwaya with the protection of the court houao In view. County Judge Beat! told the com mittee the court expected to go im mediately to work to consult an archi tect in relation to the alteration of the courthouse, which la too amall for the county business, nearly all of the offices, noticeably those of the clerk and sheriff, being entirely Inadequate. No one knows this better, than Judg Beetle, who haa Just completed two terma as sheriff and tax collector; and who haa realised for a long while that the sheriffs office, during tbe tax collection periods, waa not more than half large enough. Juat what form the extension of the courthouse will take Is not known. It I possible that excavation will per mit the Installation of offices In what la now tbe basement bf tbe building, and another Idea is to 'lower the roof of the circuit courtroom and. add another story to the building. ..Thla will be determined bv the county court, after consultation with the architect. The publicity committee haa prom ised to move off Its little building whenever the court say the word, as the ground may some day be needed for courthouse or Jail purposes. MRS.
