r '
tAsk an old tar. Those wizened vet
erans of storm and surf have a notion
born of salty experience that no gal
leon, sloop or brigantine can sail down
a christening with aught but h& best
, of vintage. There . is a story, spun
atop the bales of okum, that the Peter
Aredale, whose bare ribs cast gaunt
shadows upon the Clatsop sands, was
' named with something of viler stuff.
Who drank the champagne, the tale
does not recite. But a substitute was
dashed against her hulk, and though
the landlubber may doubt, the sea
farin' man knows, and knows well,
that it was this breach of maritime
law wliich brought Neptune to wrath.
This is one of the complications of
arid volsteadian times. But despite
the rulings of less than one' half of
one per cent, the real stuff, yea the
same bright effervescent producer of
the lightened brain, designed no more
for the threats of men, will splash
upon the portals of the new span
. upon the dedication of the Willamette
river bridge December 28.
The committee isn't going to take
any chances. . Harking back to the
sea tales of tragedy which have follow
ed the grape-Juice christenings, they
have decided that champagne from the
finest vineyards in the world, is none
too good for the naming of the new
arch at the hands of Queen Harriet.
But just where the champagne is
coming from is the question.
, "We'e going to have it it we have
to put a collection bottle in one of
the stores and ask the patriotic citi
zens whose contact with the bygone
days is more than a memory, to donate
a drop each," declares M. D. Latour-.
. ette, chairman of the general and
executive committees.
And so the search for the bottle of
champagne has begun.

A telegram to President Harding,
urging the passage of the legislation
necessary to the federal appropriation
for the relief of Astoria, was sent
yesterday by "Mayor James Shannon
for Oregon. City.
With the full approval of the munici
pal administration the mayor urged
governmental measures for the aid of
the stricken city.
The voluntary quota of $1,000 from
Oregon City and West Linn will be
subscribed fully by the first of the
year in the opinion ' of M. D. Latour-
ette, chairman of the local relief
committee. He urged the . giving of
voluntary subscriptions to aid the
raising of the fund. No organized
solicitation campaign is planned - but
subscriptions can be left at the store
of Burmeister and Andresen.
The surplus from the fund raised
for the staging of the Willamette
river bridge celebration, will be do
nated by the two cities to the relief
work.
"Queen Harriet: Accept my sin
cerest congratulations upon your
election as queen of the Willamette
river bridge celebration.
"I shall be only too glad to serve
as your maid and may your rule for
the day be the beginning of a period
of better mutual understanding and
co-operation between Oregon City and
"West Linn.
"VENA BARNES."
This was the message sent yester

queen of the bridge dedication here,
by Miss Barnes, who was' also, la can

Stores To Reopen
ASTORIA, Dec. 15. "We will open
again as soon as we can get the safe
open."
So ' reads a typical advertisement
in the Morning Astorian, one of the
Astoria daily papers, copies of which
have been received here and which
show remarkable adaptibility to cir
cumstances on the parts of the editors
and . publishers. Both the Astorian
and the Budget have been appearing
regularly in spite of the loss of their
plants in the fire a week ago.
Almost before the flames had
ceased to spread the Budget had ar
ranged to use the plant of the Sea
side Signal and until yesterday type
for the evening daily was set at the
beach town and the paper printed on
the press of the Toveri, Finnish daily
whose plant was outside the fire zone.
Machines are Saved
Two linotype machines and a Lud
low typograph machine . were saved
from the plant of the Astorian. This
equipment has been placed at the
Budget's disposal and bota papers are
set up with it The Astorian is also
printed on the press of the Toveri,
making three daily newspapers to be
printed in the same shop.
The first building permit issued
after the fire was to the Budget and
workmen have begun rebuilding. New
machinery has been ordered and in a
few weeks the paper will be in its
own home again. The Astorian plant
will also be rebuilt at once.
Advertising in the publications is
heavy, most of the text announcing
new temporary locations or intention
to rebuild as soon as possible.

LEGAL NOTICES
LAND, Dec. 20. Two mere
Itions were returned against
' Lightner, narcotic dealer and
gler, this morning, by a jury in
Federal Judge Frank S. Dietrich's
'court. As a result of today's judg
ements and the two verdicts returned
about a month ago, Lightner is liable
to a sentence, of eight years in McNeils-
island federal penitentiary and
a $25,000 fine-
Ons of today's verdicts was for con
spiracy to violate the Volstead act
and the other for conspiracy to vio
late the narcotic laws, both charges
growing out of the "kighjacking" of
a Japanese crew of 18 cases of liquor,
32 ounces of cocaine and 9 1-2 pounds
of opium on March 28. The previous
convictions grew out of an attempt in
November, 1921, to smuggle $100,000
worth of narcotics ashore through the
aid of Patrolman Persinger.

committee headed by M. D. Latourette
are completely carried out- Arrange

the principal events on the 28th,
symbolizing the union of the two
cities in a closer bond of mutual un
derstanding. A couple, the groom a resident of
the west side and the bride a resident
of Oregon City have been chosen, and
in as much as the match was con
templated between the two young
people before the committee was con
sulted the ceremony will be a real
one.
Harry Greaves, mayor of West Linn
is to act as best man and Mayor
James Shannon of Oregon City is to
give the bride away.
