OSWEGO BEGINS FIGHT r
OVER LAKE LOG BOOMS
Public Service Commission Is
To Decide On Case; Claim
Of Right to Water Aired.
Residents of the Oswego ,lake dis
trict, supported by legal counsel, ap
peared before the state public ser
vice commission in Portland Wed
nesday to protest against the use
of the lake as a log storage basin.
Claims were made that if the peti
tion of the Oswego Log and Boom
comnany. asked for permission to use
the lower end of the lake for storage
.purposes, was granted, it would de
preciate the value of lakeside proper
ty, keep away prospective home build
ers, kill fish and destroy the lake as a
pleasure and scenic asset of the community.
Prior Claim Sited
The hearing, which began Friday
at 10 o'clock, will continue ror some
time. The company, in . is petition,
claims that under state law any log
ging firm has the right of eminent
domain over land adjacent to a natural
stream. It asks permission to make
use of the lower end of" the body-of
water. Logs, brought in over the Til
lamook line of the Southern, Pacific'
would be dumped into the lake, held
in booms until a market was afforded
and then dragged by a hoist to a skid
way which would carry them over the
narrow neck of land separating the
lake from the "Willamette river.
During the hearing it developed that
the Oregon Iron & Steel company was
the sole owner of all riparian rights,
lake side lots being sold with a nar
row strip of land separating them from
the shore line.
Storage Plan Assailed
In addition to the residents, who
are toeing represented by W. P. La
Roche, the Oregon Iron & Steel com
pany is objecting to .the proposed stor
age basin through Attorneys A. S. Pat-
