OREGON CITY, ENTERPRISE, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1 7, 1922. Pag e seven I SANDY WOMAN IS UNDER ARREST ON FEDERAL CHARGE Mrs. Sadie Bosholm is Facing Action in U. S. Court On Indictment for Sending of Obscene Matter Thru Mails BRITISH CITIZENS ARE BEATEN BY MOSLEMS Acute Situation Is Reported at Constantinople as Result of Clashes; Cables are Severed HEARING SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 21ST Annoymous Letter Received By Mrs. Maroney Prompts Probe; Details are Veiled. LONDON, Nor. 13. Clashes in which British citizens were beaten up by Turks were reported from. Con stantinople today. Gen. Sir Charles Harington, British commander in chief at Constantinople, has ordered the withdrawal of the disorderly Kern alist forces that caused the trouble. The situation at Constantinople con tinues acute. Panic waa reported among part of the population, with many civilians in flight. Although the allied high commis sioners have drawn up a proclamation of martial law, it had not been put into effect at latest reports. Owing to the cutting of the near east cable and the censorship, many conflicting reports are being received from the near east. One was that Rafet Pasha, nationalist envoy at Constantinople, had refused to recog nize thei allies? administration and was overriding the capitulations the restrictions placed upon the Turks at the end of the war. Reports, however, said the situation in Turkey was more favorable. General Harington has refused to recognize the Turkish nationalist government- of Chanak, appointed. Dy the Angora government. The near east peace conference was to have opened today at Lausanne Switzerland, and the Turkish envoys already have arrived there. Owing to the dangerous new situation which has developed in the near east, the allies have agreed that the parley should be continued until next Mon day, and perhaps longer. A tale of neighborhood jealousy and perhaps an unusual study in psych ology, will be revealed when the fed eral case agalnt Mrs. Sadie Bosholm, of Sandy, comes to trial in the United States Courts. Mrs. Bosholm, it was learned from the authorities yester day, is under arrest en. a federal in dictment charging her with sending - obscene matter through the mails. The woman, who is about 45 years of age, it at liberty on '$250 bail pend ing a hearing in Portland November 21. According to the indictment, tne letter, an anonymous epistle, was written to Mrs. Alma Maroney, of Sandy. The wording of the letter, the true bill charges, is "obscene, lewd and lascivious." and of too obscene a nature to be reprinted in the indict-1 ment. It contains pointed references to the personal habits and morality of the woman to whom it was addressed. The letter was placed in the hands of a. handwriting expert: Neighbor hood gossip fr some time had told of a disagreement 'between the two women, over apparently no cause at all. Investigation by . the postal au thorities and by the U. S. district at torney's office resulted in the arrest of Mrs. Bosholm, and her being rnvrrA ..'!. t Vi ti on t li r ell i rtf tYk A letter. j chrls Bullard, is today suffering Th authorities intimate that in the from a broken leg sustained while at trial of the case other anynomous let-' work on his farm at Mountain View. ters of a somewhat similar nature, re ceived by Mrs. Bosholm herself, will be introduced. Reports, of banditry and disorder in the earth quake district together with news of additional eath shocks and Indications, that the calamity has reached) ap palling proportions caused the Chilean government today to consider the ad visability of sending troops to Co- quimbo and Atacama to reinforce the regular garrisons, which are too small to cope with the situation and aid In relief work. Outlawry broke out last night in the town of Vallenar, the chief suf ferer from the earthquake, where it is estimated 1000 of the inhabitants perished, while reports of "robberies and hold-ups came from other places The 600 bodies already recovered from the ruins of Vallenar were car ried to the public square after they had been indentified and were burned. The town of Carrizal, consisting mostly of under ground dwellings and copper mines, isg reported to have disappeared, but no mention of the loss of lives is made. The inhabitants number about 200, and there are 350 other persons living at the port of Carrizaf. The inland tow of Freirina is virtu ally ruined and scores are dead there according to a wireless message from arrived at Huasco. The population of Freirina, numbering 3600 persons, had been cut off from outside communi cation until today. At Huasco the sea rose ten metres, destroying the water front structures and wrecking the numerous craft. Several seamen were drowned by the huge waves. A tug was swept inland two kilometers.
