Gasoline Reserve Is
Said To Be Grooving
WASHINGTON, D. C, June 17
The nation's gasoline reserve con
tinues to mount to new heights, the
bureau of mines said today in mak
ing public figures showing that on
May 1 the stocks on hand amounted
to 892,267,763 gallons, an increase "of
38,000.000 gallons over the previous
high record mark of April 1.
"The seasonable decline in the
gasoline stock curve, occurring gen
erally during April or May," the bu
reau said, "has not yet started, as is
evidenced by the sharp increase in
reserves."
Automotive Exports
From Germany Fall
j The exports of automotive products
from Germany decreased nearly 40
per cent as compared with exports
during January, 684 passenger - cars,
motor trucks and chassis having been
exported, according to' unofficial re
ports received by the Automotive Di
vision of the Department of Com
merce. The total exports of cars and
chassis for the first two months of
1922 amount to 1,775. The Nether
lands imported 30 per cent, Belgium
14 per cent, Spain 8 per cent, Switz
erland 4 per cent, Denmark 4 per
cent, Sweden 4 per cent, France 2 per
cent. Great Britain 2 per cent, and
Austria 2 per cent. The remainder
were taken by various other countries
in lesser amounts.
GIRL HELD CAPTIVE ON
BOAT FOR SIX MONTHS
BREMERTON, Wash., June 16.
That she was held captive six months
on a fishing boat, is the story told
authorities here by Grace Rahman,
aged 15, who was taken today by her
father and police agents from , the
craft Of Elmer Weber, aged 55, a fish
erman. Weber was arrested on a statutory
charge. The girl disappeared from
her home December 26. Her story,
police authorities say, is that Weber
seized her on the beach near Bremer
ton, took her aboard his boat, forced
her to don boy's clothing and to cut
her hair.

WASHINGTON, - June 16. The
house merchant marine committee
this afternoon -voted to make a fav.
orable report to the house on the ad
ministration's subsidy bill, thereby
complying with the demand of Presi
dent Harding for prompt action on
the legislation.
In the form finally agreed upon by
the committee for presentation to the
house, the ship subsidy bill will con
tain no provision prohibiting the sale
of intoxicating liquor on vessels oper
ated by the United States shipping
board.
PORTLAND MAN GUILTY
OF MANN ACT VIOLATION
PORTLAND, June IT. A verdict of
guilty was returned against Harvey E.
Osborn, charged with violation of the
Mann white slave act, by a jury in
Judge Bean's federal court yesterday.
Osborn was found guilty of trans
porting Thelma Gunn, former Seattle
telephone operator, from Seattle to
Portland in June, 1921, for immoral
purposes.
The defendant, cool and collected
on the stand, lost his composure for
only a second when he heard the ver
dict. His face became ashen and he
trembled as he turned to his wife, for
merly Mrs. Walter J. Holman.
LIQUOR MAY BE CARRIED

MAN KILLED; TWO HURT
WHEN TRAIN HITS AUTO
EUGENE, June 20 W. A. Brast
field, 50 years old, was killed outright
and Harry Thompson and G. R. Smith
were injured when a freight car crash
ed into an automobile in which they
were riding shortly after 3 o'clock this
morning at Springfield. The three
men, all employes of the Booth-Kelly
mill, were just coming off the night
shift. Their machine was struck at
the Fifth street crossing by a string
of freight cars being switched.
The rear end of a freight car hit
the automobile squarely, knocking-it
fifty feet down the track. Brasfield
and Thompson, who were riding in
the seat of the car, were hurled under
the freight train, while Smith, who
was on the running hoard, was thrown
on top of the flat car.
The automobile was wrecked and
the freight car had to be lifted up
before the lifeless body of Brasfield
could be extricated.
TWO WOMEN KILLED IN
AUTO CRASH AT ASTORIA
ASTORIA, June 17. Two women
are dead, one man is believed fatally
injured and another is seriously hurt
as the result of an automobile acci
dent late last night on the Astoria
Warrenton road, a few hundred yards
west of the Lewis and Clark river
bridge.
The driver of the car was L. G.
Stinson of this city and he was bruis
ed, but not seriously hurt. He has
been placed under arrest pending an
investigation of the accident by the
coroner's jury.
The car went into the ditch at the
side of the road. The wind shield and
top were demolished and it is believed
passengers in the rear seat were
thrown through the top.
TRAIN ROBBER SUSPECT
FOILED IN ESCAPE PLAN
PORTLAND, June 17. A desperate
plan for Ernest Miller, train robber
suspect, to escape from deputy United
States marshals and dash behind a
screen of guns to a nearby automo
bile, was spiked by officers today. .
It was the second time within a
week, according to the authorities,
that fate tripped Miller up. He was
arrested, police say,- after a plot to
rob an O.-W. R. R. & N. passenger
train on the East side had been un
covered. CONFESSED SLAYER OF
IS GIVEN LIE
JACKSON, Mich., June 20. George
Straub, confessed slayer of Alice Mal
let, pleaded guilty to first degree mur
der in the Jackson county court this
morning, and immediately was sen
tenced to confioement at hard labor
for life in Marquette -prison. -
Miss Mallett, former Ontario, Ore.,
girl, who was matron at a girls' home,
was murdered about ten days ago,
having apparently been attacked with
an ax. . -.
POLICE FOIL ATTEMPT
TO BURN IRISH CASTLE
BELFAST, June 20. An attempt by
Republican sympathizers to raid and
burn Stormont Castle, the seat of the
Ulster government, was foiled today
by special constables. The Sinn Fein
prisoners in Belfast are being trans
ferred to a floating prison .ship, the
Magenta, which was purchased from
Americans.
