NOHFOLK, Va., April 14. Nearly
200 homes were destroyed, rendering
500 families homeless, by fire which
swept the negro belt. of Berkely, a
Norfolk suburb, late festerday. The '
damage is estimated at more than
?1,000,000. Several stores, two ne
gro churches, two river steamers, a
schooner, a houseboat and a small fac
tory also were destroyed.
FATHER IN AXE TRAGEDY

Tremblay, father of the family who
were victims of the "axe fiend," near
here Tuesday night, when one person
was slain and five others injured,
committed suicide this mornng.
Tremblay, according to reports
reached here, had been at the home
of Joseph Bachand, 11 miles from
here, since the tragedy. He slipped
away from friends here, it was stated
and took poison. How he obtained
the ipoison was not revealed.
A finger print expert yesterday
took photographs of th4 bloody im
prints on the axe and on furnishings
in the Tremblay home. Finger prints
of Tremblay were also taken.
