family in college is a record worth

school have been humming along in
fine shape since the opening of school.
The pupils F-eem to like the teachers
and the teachers like their pupils.
SANDY LOCALS
SANDY, Sept. 21. The Cottrell
church will sorn be re-shingid by do
nation work. The plan , is for the
neighborhood to "turn out" for a day
and save the "hire." A Portland firm
sold the shingles at cost and a Sandy
truck man is hauling them at half
price.
Rev. Lennard, a Baptist minister r.f
Portland, preached at Cottrell on Sun
day morning. Mr. Lennard is 75 years
of age and has been a minister 53
years.
The Multnomah County Pomona
grange passed a strong resolution con
demning "questionable dancing and
ether practices o an indecent and
immoral nature at various road houses
in the county."
A number of people from Pleasant
Home and various sections are ex
pected to attend the Multnomah Coun
ty Sunday School convention at Port
land September 27, at the First Pres
byterian church.
The annual community council will
meet at Cottrell on Thursday night
September 29. Reports of committi:?
and election of officers will be a por
tion of the program.
Before Sandy realizes it there will
be a transcontinental railroad south of
this town. The quiet work of this
Tailroad building isi "business," and
yet if we were not asleep we would
begin to see that wide gage, well built
road is not transient. In fact some
Portland people who made the predic
tion when it started that it w-ould run
south of Mt. Hood and on east from
there.
Subordinate granges in Multnomah
County have increased their member
ship 61 per cent the past year and a
half, the total membership being 117.1

the port of amusement to take the pale

The baseball season is over for the
Sandy team. The boys stopped while
their honors were great.
John Odell drove out from Portland
the other day and took Mrs. Allen and
Mr. Mikkelson up to Brightwood.
Mr." and Mrs. Pndemore were in
town again the past week going down
the Portland way. ,
Jack Scales arrived home in all his
elory Sunday after two weeks of
"hard drinking" at Shepherd's
Splriner's The Store windows were
decorated with autumn leaves a wel
come home.
Mrs. Billy Allen was in town on
her return from Portland where she
visited her sister last week. Mrs. AI
len said she and BiHy were igoing to
Pendleton to see the big round up.
R. S. Smith, Bob Akin and Herman
Krebs left in the gray of Tuesday
morning to take in all. the sights and
"trimmings" at the Pendleton Ronud
Up.
Mrs. E. Dodd went up to Cherryville
to spend Saturday night and attend
ed a dance in the neighborhood.
P. T. Shelley drove over from Hood
River last week after the "family"
and took them to the famous valley to
spend the week end at the Troy
Shelley ranch.
Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Purcell were
favored by a visit from relatives over
the week en recently. Besides Mr.
and Mrs. W- F. Doltz, and daughters
Harriet and Bertha Doltz and F. W.
Doltz, a nephew of the Purcells, Mr
Henry Doltz of Minneapolis. Minn.,
was in the party. He made a short
trip to the coast and it was only
natural he should make a trip here. He
was charmed with Sandy and it's ideal
loction.
Mrs. Blanche Shelley, Jonne and lit
tle Joe Hooker and Mrsi. Mary Wil
son were dinner guests of Mr. and
Mrs. Purcell recently, with hcspitlity
brightened the last evening Mrs. Wil
son spent here before going to, Seat
tle. Herman Krebs is through with his
- threshing work and is home again,
and his mother Mrs. Marie Krebs is
home from a very enjoyable vacation
of several weeks.
C. D. Purcell made a business trip
to Portland last week and won a case
that was outlawed.
Mrs. Mary I. Wilson, mother of Mrs
Shelley, has gone to Seattle for the
winter as. the coast climate agrees
much better with her than any other.
Before going away Mrs. Wilson- suc
ceeded in renting her house to a fore
man on the gravel work for the high
way. Isabel Gray, our "hello"" girl," has
been very husky with a cold the past
week. - '
Mrs. Graves, wife of the Sandy
hotel man, went to Portland over the
week end and Mrs. Susan Kelliher
looked after the hotel work in her absence.

Joe DeShazer was down here from
the Dover section says the threshing
season is closed up that way. The
east wind saved the- potatoes from
freezing up there. Hay-baling has been

The Willamette valley late potato
crop is said to be practically ruined
for most part by the frosts of two
weeks ago, according to J. J. Wilson, a
travelling salesman who drove to Ku-

Gresham and Corbett during the week.
At Corbett the Duncan's got a lot of
salmon for canning.
Mrs. Henry Perret says she has 500
quarts of fruit and vegetables put up
and is not quite through.
Mrs. Bartelmay and young daughter
were in town the other day. Mr.
Bartelmay has returned from Eastern
Oregon, but the entire family will he
moving there ere long.
Mr and Mrs. Wm. Hammond came
out Saturday and after looking some
business interests in the face drove
on to their summer place for a short
rest.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin Lennartz aad
daughter Anna were all day guests
of the H. S. Eddy family last Sunday.
Frank Armstrong, .brother of Mrs.
John Mitchell, and Miss Eva Adams
spent Sunday at the Mitchell ranch.
Birthday parties for the Sandy chil
dren seem to be all the rage of late but
the older folk seem to have passed the

Mr. Byron, father of Mrs. A. J.
Ault is still very ill at his home on

C. A. Bowers, the Sandy wood con
tractor and the Millers have discover
ed they used to live in the same com
munity and have many mutual acquaintances.
The fireside of the Duke household
glowed with warmth of hospitality at
recent dinner party wich was
greatly appreciated by the following
guests: Mr and Mrs. Fred Proctor, and
little daughter, Dr. and Mrs. Julius
Sture, Mrs. Miller and Miss Margaret
Miller. Baby Sture cooed in his basi
net but was not allowed to come to
the table, which was laden with all
sorts of delicious things.
The manager of the "Mt. Hood" air
ship company was in town one night
recently trying to get his affairs ad
justed. Joel .Tarl is fast disposing of his per
sonal property to get ready to join his
family in California for the v. inter.
Mrs. Alice Scales drove to Corbeti
Sunday to meet her husband. Jack
Scales who was returning from th
spring's.
Mr. and Mrs. George Perret enter
tained a party of six friends from Port
land with the characteristic Perret
hospitality last Sunday.
Mrs. John Mitchell, Mrs. Augubt
Bedenstein and Mrs. Leo. Lohn
field gave a dance at the old Tapu
place last Saturday night. There wa
a large crowd and everyone had a fin
time. The Mitchells, Lehnfields, Dock
erys and Mr. Peacock and his friend
Helen Nelson, Dave Douglass and son
and Alice Douglass spent the remain
der of the night at the Bedensteh:
home where there was much eating
and music until mcrning dawned.

Gresham were Mr. and Mrs. E. Beers
and Mrs. Beatrice Harris, Mr. and
Mrs. George Beers and Hazel Beers,
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Proctor, and the

Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Snedden and
daughter Martha Snedden have re
turned from a week's outing at Sea
side.

Mrs. F. H. Lake spent several days
visiting her old neighbors at Pleasant
Home last week, remaining for Po
mona Grange on Saturday
Mayor and Mrs. Junker took a day
or two off and visited the metropolis
recently.
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Duke included
Mrs. Henry Perret and Mrs. Miller in
their Orient Pomona grange party
James Bell of Sandy ridge also show
ed his "grangerian" interest by taking
himself down to the big program-
Mrs. John Mitchell visted Mrs. Lebn
field recently, remaining1 for the mid
day meal.
J. M. C-Miller got as far away as
Fairview the other day. He was au
auto-CTiest of Mr. Shaw, the Sandy
chief-of-nolice. but the "Judge" was
merely out on a business trip.

were out again from a two day's fisti

Hnry Ridderbush bought himself a
"Lizzie" about a month ago and has
already learned to drive it well.
It looked like there was a terrific
fire over the Bull Run way the other
day but it was only Olf Selser's slasb

According to an "old-timer" here,
forty-four years ago, Rev. Father Ver
haag of East Portland held the first
Catholic church service in this part of
the country at the old log school
house n the north slope of Frances
Revenue's field, which was near the
present travelled road .Services in
privote families continued from that
time till 22 years ago when a church
building was erected in Sandy. .

Anton Mikkelson passed through our
small town last Saturday. The mill at
Brightwood turned out a little more
bridge material this week.

land at last account where she has
has been taking' care of her young
niece and nephews, the Art Dixon

A delightful children's party was
given by Mrs. D- F. Eason Monday
afternoon in honor of her little son's
birthday. Eighteen little tots were
seated at the table, the color scheme
of which was yellow. The shades were
draw n and yellow candle light made
the dining room look quit! "party
fied'' There was a birthday cake decor
ated with seven candles and pink
roses made from icing and there was
ice cream, candy and cookies. Those
present were Arthur. Mildred, Mabel
and Robert Frace, Richard Maronay,
Ronnie Esson, Kenneth Scales, Heinia
Dittert, Forrest and Lawrence Shaw,
Wir-nifred Glockner, Mabel Lilly.

ret, Stearnes and Mary Eason. .Mrs.
George Perret assisted Mrs. Eason.
The news has "leaked out" about the
fun the Zogg-Gunderson-Howe party
had when on Wild Cat camping for
huckleberry gathering at the time the
season was about ended The girls of
the party were scouting around to
find extra good picking, and they
found a fine patch, but a big black
bear was helping himself and was not
inclinde to give up a good thing, so
the girls headed for camp, "hitting the
high places" as they sped. The boy.s
got their guns and made a wild chase
after Mr. Bear, but he made his get-a-way.
And it snowed, then, and of
course the party had to head for home.
Mr. and Mrs. Dave Douglass gave
a "more than fine" chicken dinner
Sunday. Those present besides the
Douglass family were Mr. and Mrs.
Reed, and little daughter, Henry Quani
and Mrs. E. Dodd.

Mrs. Dave Douglass says it did not
freeze at their ranch, they had no
frost, but it froze at Cherryville.
Mr. Dockery and Billie furnished
the music for the dance Saturday
night. Three dances were planned for
the same neighborhood the same
nisht. so after thinking it over, de
cided to all unite at Sam Mil
place, otherwise known as the Tapp
place at Cherryville.
The only drawback to the dance
was the crowd was too large for the
food supply, so it was decided to omit
the refreshments to the regret of all
present. Among tnose present were
the Bedenstein. Mitchell Lehnfield,
Dave Douglass, John Jonsrud, Folsoin,
Funk families and Mrs. Tom Hagan,
Mr3. Alma Maronay, Miss Fay Young,
Mrs. Friel and daughter, Miss Helen

Mr. Dockery Billie and John.
