Miss Caroline "Vaeretti attended the
big ocmmjnity council all day affair
at Orient Monday.
J. D. Tobin, contract bridge builder
on the highway, is here again this
week. The seventh bridge is under
contraction. Tobin is at the Sandy
hotel.
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Duke and Mrs,
Miller attended the Labor Day pro
gra of the community council at Ori
ent Monday, then drove to Morris
Wheelers home and make a ''raid"
on the Wheeler Himalayas.
Mr Johnson, Sr. of Orient, is not in
his usual health, in fact has been quite
ill and is on a diet.
John Bryon, father of Mrs. A. J.
Ault is quite ill and was taken to
Portland Tuesday to have an X-ray
taken.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Lundeen are re
ceiving congratulations over the ar
rival of a second child, which was
born Aueust 27. The stork was of
a generous mind, bringing a fine eleven
pound boy. Mrs. Lundeen went to her
home at Sandyridge on Sautrday.
ft. A. Chown was in town the other
day and said he was "just stalling
around" while his daughter took her
music lesson.
"Beattie" Harris was behind the
counter at the Sacles store- several
days last week.
Or, and Mrs. Julius Sture and baby
Stanley drove to Colton on Sunday to
attend the annual meeting of til
State Luther League which was in
convention there.
Mrs. Purcell called on Miss Esmer
Mixter who is in Portland for a week
or more at the Wheeldo Annex. Miss
Mixter had her tonsils removed. Mis3
Vera Mixter is with her sister.
Rev. Runyon Mf.'thodist minister
who lives at Cherryville and formerly
preached at Sandy was in town a few
days ago as he returned from a Port
land hospital where he had cataracts
removed from both of his eyes.
Billy Walker's little girl cut her
hand badly by falling on a piece of
glass and druggist Esson acted as
surgeon. The Walkers' live on the
Netzel place and plan building a fine
home out this way when the highway
is al! completed so he can drive back
and forth to work in the city.
Miss Pauline Zagg and brother
Louis Zagg were in town Sunday.
Miss Zogg looks fine but is still under
the doctor's care.
Miss Mary Junker drove to Gresham
a few days ago to meet Mies Mildred
Aiken of Whittier, Cal. and Mrs. Ber
taut, who came out for a few hours'
visit with 'Kate and Mary." Miss
Aiken will be remembered as the as
sistant in the high school here when
Prof Berhaut was principal in '17 and
18 Miss Aiken left Los Angeles the
day after school closed for a trip east
and after arriving at Minneapolis tour
ed 4,000 miles with a party of friends,
going to Virginia and back va auto
mobile, and vsited many resorts in
Canada as she returned. Miss Aiken
was sorry not to stay long enough to
?ee all of her old friends here and ask
ed to be remembered to all of them.
An interesting event will occur to
morrow (Saturday) evening at the
Lutheran church when Miss Emma
Netzel will be united in marriage to
Otto France of Spokane, Wash. Rev.
F. Dobbeiful will perform the cere
mony. The following was the- itinerary of
Mrs. Bertha A. Purcell while in Port
land last week: "Heard Rev. Lands
boro. preach, who :s a Princeton class
mate of my brother, Dr Paul Doltz;
listened to the famous surgeons of
American collegei of surgery at the
Coufh school auditorium; attended a
dinner given for a former pupil, Vir
ginia Irwin, who will enter the Holly
wood school for girls at Los Angeles
September 13; took a river trip to
Astoria; tattended a lecture on music;
tad a nice visit with Vera and Esmcr
Mixter and Miss Opal Selby; enjoyed
a nice tea with Mrs Gilhert, wife of
Judge Gilbert."
Mrs. Anna E. Grinelli-Karr of Port--land
was an overnight guest of the
Millars Monday. Air. and Mrs. Karr
are building a summer home at Rho
dodendren' which they have named
Karr-Ka-Kee-Kottage. Mrs. Karr has
made seven trips up the mountains
this season, and will so back and forth
in the winter for week ends. Many
cottages are being built there, but cer
tain requirements are made by the
government, according to Mrs. Kaar.
Jack Scales has installed a new
feed chopper in his warehouse during
the past week.
A poor potato crop is reported
around here as well as elsewhere in
the state They are selling for two
cents around here at the present time.
There is some hope that the late crop
will turn out better.
The painting "bug" which is still in
oculating in the minds of Sandy pro
perty owners is a most desirable germ
to get started. The post office is the
latest building to dress up. The Junk
ers and Schmitz roofs are improved
with a new coat of preservative.
Scharnke and son have gone up to
Jim Dixon's to painf and paper at
their place and when through there
will begin on the fine residence of Ned
Nelson at Kelso.
Sheriff Wilson was perambulating
around the Bull Run and Sandy coun
try Saturday night, but the "moon"
did not shine out from behind the
clouds,
Mr. and Mrs. Anton Malar, Mr. and
Mrs Will Bosholm and Ed. Hart at
tended the big Farm Bureau picnic at
Oregon City on Labor Day.
George Beers sold the Joe Dunn
place at Camas, Wash., recently. The
46 acres bought $7,000. Dunn will
move to Salem, and Mr. Farmer of
Portland who bought tjje place wi'l
let his son try ranching.
P. B. Gray's shoulder was hurt at
ihe mill by falling lumber so he had
to lay off part of last week.
B Nelson finished stacking his
grain just before the big thunderstorm
and rain, came on Saturday night. He
got his grain, all inside and is ns
waiting for a thresher to come his
way. Krebs finished in the neighbor
hood before Nelson was ready
Clearing was in progress in Lover's
lane the first of the week and Dixon
sold the wood for $3.00 per cord to a
Portland man" who did his own haul
ing. Work is progressing fine at al!
points along the highway.
Mr. Schwarts took Mrs Guldensup
and children to the hop fields beyond
Salem in his truck a few days ago.
Highway Commissioner Yeon and
Engineer Nuns drove through out
town Saturday on an inspection tour
up the mountains.
One night recently a fire started in
the logging at Dwyers and the limb of
a tree fell on the "donkey" wire and
lodged there started the whistle which
kept blowing till everybody 'round
was wakened and rushed to see what
was wrong. It was a kindly act that
Jimb performed as there is much brush
:n the "workings" over there. One
"donkey" was burned before help ar
rived. C F. Barber was out from Portland
working with delphinium plants sever
al days last week and was a guest of
Mr. and Mrs Rnprath wb-j are located
on his acreage.
Mr. Jocelyn traded horses with Mr.
Howett, of Howett and Dixon last
week and now has a splendidly match
ed team. Jocelyn also indulged in a
brand new set of first class harness.
The horses "set otf the harness ana
the harness get off the horses."
R. Netzel has been gradually dis
posing of the sheep he bought from
Anton Jenger until he has only seven
head left. Netzel found the sheep
business a poor game. He realizeu
only a dollar a head for the wool he
sold, and that was not counting then-
feed for a year. Netzel says the
trouble is everybody bought sheep at
such high prices and now have to
sell for almost nothing; still, he says
the business will "come back" be
cause the flocks will soon be so scarce
Netzel is milking ten cows and says
he will stay with the dairy business.
Ar.ton Jerger came home to take
his wife and baby to Walla Walla. He
is hauling grain there and has two
months and a half of work yet. Grain
turned out from 45 to 65 bushels per
acre in that section.
There is .complaint of considerable
rust on the grain around here. The
fall sowing turned out much better
than the spring grain.
Jack Burnett and his brother have
bought a creamery in Portland, but
Jack has not yet decided to move
away form here, but may do so later.
Two or three new families are re
ported to move in town very soon.
There are not many vacant houses
here, so incomers had better hurry
up.
Hazel Beers was helping the Scales
Co. run their store last Tuesday and
Mrs. Beers kept office while George
went to the city.
Loads of ferns and moss are being
taken to Portland florists from, the
wooded glens around here. Time may

roows are taken up it takes a long
time to reproduce. A truck from
.Seattle came to Sandyridge one, year
and took a load from Deep Creek.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin Lennartz and
daughter Anna have returned from a
10 day's trip to Crater Lake, their
speedometer measuring 900 mile-?,
and report a most enjoyable time.
They travelled around the rim of the
lake and returned via the Eastern
Oregon route. While on the way down
t- Southern Oregon the Lennartzes
visited the'r old neighbors, Mr. and
Mrs. I. N. L. Shriner at Ashland. M
Lennartz said "you can find any old
thing you want on a trip r.ke that! w e
found rough and other scenery, sheep.

Mrs Alma Maronay spend last weak
with her grandmother Cline, and her
parents Mr. and Mrs. J. H. L. Maybee
of Lents. Mr. and Mrs. Maybee and
Lcyd drove Mrs. Maronay home,
"Grandpa" Jones Cline coming with
the "folks."
