left household effects but on account
of illness had not been able to come
out for a few summers, and, somehow
their belongings were) melting away be-
cause of acquisitive mortals appropri
ating whatsoever, looked good to
greedy eyes bo Yoakum decided to
take the remainder of their furnish
ings away while the taking was good.
Aside from the holidays, the first
week of September is always the
heaviest mail week in the Sandy post
office for the year as tourists begin
to "eo back" about that time.
The Henry Ferret family returned
the middle of the week from an auto
mobile trip over to the Bend country
of several days duration.
Work on the market road is pro
gressing. However, a delegation vis
ited the county commissioners asking
that the route be changed two miles
farther east, from the present survey
ihrriitri IfirWOOd.

H. S. Eddy sold forty acres of land
belonging to the Wendland Bros, to
TTVaTit- Snow of Portland. This land

will probably build on his new acqui
sition. H. Lubke came out from the city
Monday bag and baggage and Is go
ing to bu:ld a bungalow on his laad
near Haselwander's place. Thus im
provements continue in this section..
The following criticism of the far
west vas j-nade recently by an east
erner who has been visiting all along
the coast for several months: and was
in Sandy also for several weeks
"While the climate is lovely and at
tractions are great on the coast the
i eople seem to reek only what amuses
them, and spend every energy to find
some "new" pleasure, and, naturally,
the poise of the spiritual is so decide
ly lacking that one accustomed to
seeking the real and lasting things of
life cannot help feeling there is need
of more of the intellectual and spirit
ual, rather than having only sports
for a constant diet."
Ezekiel Beers and Fred Proctor
went to Portland Sunday to see Rev.
Alexander Beers who has just return
ed from California very little improv
ed in health. Rev. Beers has been
failing for about eight months.
A surprise- party was given the
Charley Bartlemay family on Sandy1
ridge a few days ago, as an expres
sion of the esteem in which these
perfectly good citizens were held in
their neighborhood. A delightful
time was had. The Bartelmays leave
soon for their new home m Eastern
Oregon.
Mr and Mrs Frank Kerr, their
daughter and two maids of Portland
are located on the George Strong
place for the remainder of the sum
mer season. The Kerrs have leased
this place for two or three years and
will, in a small way, at least, become
acquainted with our own home .town.
R. Monroe) Gilbert wlho. spent a
week here as the guest of Mr. and
Mrs. D. F. Eason left Monday for
Salem where he has an exceptional
arts and crafts establishment and
studio combined. Mr. Gilbert car
ried away eight splendid sketches cf
scenes around Sandy, any says he
hopes to return next summer and
ramw "rie-ht down by the Sandy" for
two weeks to paint the fascinating
srrenes. along this turbulent little river.
Two scenes were painted near the old
Proctor mill, one at Cedar creek on
the Strack place, and two of Mt Hood
up the Firwood way. There were so
many attractive places Gilbert said he
"hardly knew what to paint first."
Mrs. George Perret and children
spent a whole week in Portland visit
ing- at her mother's home, returning
a day or two aso. Her mother, Mrs
Acheson, will leave for New York
shortly with her daughter, Miss Edna
Acheron for a few monthsi' stay iri
the great metropolis.
Tourist patronage at the mountain
resorts and even the seaside hotels is
said to be far below normal this sum
mer. Just what the reason is, is
problematical.
Erwin, the youngest son of Mr. and
Mrs. w -E. Child of Poring had the
misfortune to fall and break twe
bones in his elbow last week. Dr
Hughes of Gresham was called to at
tend the case.
Mrs. J. C. Dake will probably be
home in a day or two from a trip to
Crater Lake.
Tlis following Kuests enjoyed a
dancing party at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Adolph Dahrens last Saturday
night and they danced until the small
hours everyone having- a lot of fun:
Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Elliott and
Zene. Mr. and Mrs Will Carrow. Mr.
and Mrs. Henry Wewer, Miss Mildred
Bosholm, Miss Nettie Schmitz, Her
man Krebs, Martha and Bertha Hoff
man. Mr. and Mrs Walter Krebs and
Harold, Mr. -and Mrs. George Beers,
Justice Strowbridge and Miss Helzer,
of Portland, who was a week-end guest
at the Dahrens home. Sandwiches,
coffee, cake and salad were served.
SERVICE POSTPONED
BANDY, Aug. 23. The postpone
ment of the all-day basket dinner serv
ice at Meinig'Si grove is. found neces
sary as tbe speaker, Rev. Boddy of
Hood River, could not get his dates ar
ranged to be with us then as at first
hoped. He can be with us the middle
of September, but weather conditions
may not be favorable at that time for
an out of doof service.
CAUGHT IN MILL SHAFT
SANDY, Aug. 2 --Charley Suckow
of Sandy had a narrow escape yester
day at the Jonsnid-Gnnderscn mill.
While putting a belt on tho planer
Suckow's shirt sleeve caught on a
piece of rough shafting and his shirt
and nndershirt were both torn off
which was lucky or his arm would
have been caught in the planer. Ex
