TELEPHONE SERVICE SCORED BY
TESTER AT SALEM REHEARING
SALEM, Or., July 21. Telephor-e
service tests made recently in Port
land by Mrs. Agnes Johnson, ex-employe
of the telephone company, were
introduced as the first evidence pre
sented by Assistant City Attornev
Tomlinson in his effort to have the
advanced telephone rates effected last
March set aside.
Mrs. Johnson was in the employ of
the company for 12 years, first as an
operator, later, as an information oper
ator, then as a supervisor and finally
as chief operator.
Records of the service test made
through all of the Portland exchanges
-showed that she had sained a re
sponse from 339 calls.
She testified that she had made a
greater number of calls, hut in some
instances the telephone subscribers
refused to divulge any information
after learning that she was employed
by the city attorneys office. They
expressed fear that their telephones
migiit be taken from them.
Astoria is complaining according to
their attorney, James Mot.t, because
she is being called upon" to pay rates
which produce a return of 8.6(5 per
cent, when computed upon a basis of
returns of ten months of the present
year, and two months of 1920, or 9.7
percent when computed upon the es
timated returns of 1921. He called X.
Wigdon, a rate expert in the employ
of the telephone company, for the pur
pose of establishing the raie of return
the company is receiving at Astoria.

University of Oregon, July 22,
(Special) Although there are ap
proximately six thousand public
school teachers in the state of Ore
gon, only thirty of them receive an
mial salaries of three thousand dol
lars or more, according to figures
brought out during the summer term
t:f the LTniversity of Oregon. Ther-i
are 1:4 teaching positions carrying
salaries between twenty-five hundred
and three thousand dollars a year.
School rooms jbs throughout the stat.:
with a compensation ranging be
tween two thousand dollars and
twenty-five hundred a year number
only 240. These figures include
Portland. .All the rest of the thous
ands "of teachers, including hundreds
of superintendents, principals, an 1
supervisors, receive less than two
thousand dollars a year for their ser
vices, though large numbers of them
have spent four years in a university,
college or normal school
Several superintendents in attend
ance at the University su'nmer term
from tho larger towns of the state re
port difficulty in completing their
staffs for next year. There is still
a shortage of teachers, they say. Th-.j
number of calls ci.vning in to the ap
pointment bureau of the University
further confirm this report of a tea
cher scarcity.
While fifty per cent of those re
ceiving the top-notch salaries of
three thousand dollars or more arc
graduates or former students of the
University of Oregon, their compen
sation does not equal that of alumni
ci" the University who have spent a
like number of years in other professions.

WORK ON SMALL.FRUIT
CENSUS HERE STARTS
In the outlining of the survey of tho
f;mall fruit and berry industry of
Clackamas county, definite work has
been started by the county horticul
ture project leaders, who at their
meeting last week, decided on the sur
vey as the first step toward a co
operative marketing program.
Forms for the col'ection of all data
upon the farms and producing areas
of the county were sent out Monday
by County Agent W. A. Holt. ' The
data to be collected includes the loca
tion of each orchard, the name and
address of the owner, the kind of pro
duce, number of trees in growth or
bearing, and the yield for the years
of 1920 and 1921 together with the
shipping point.
The survey, when completed, will
present an accurate compilation of
facts upon the yield in the county r-.i
pears, prunes, apnles, raspberries,
strawberries, loganberries and nuts.
Any small fruit that is produced in
'iiarketabie quantities will be included.
Although no definite program' fo'

tion or a co-operative marketing agree

outlined, such steps will be taken as
soon as full information as to the
total production of the ;-ounty is in
hand. Figures coin piled in the last
census taken by the L:nited States
government sho-w that the yield of
these commodities in Clackamas com
pares very favorably with other coun
lies throughout the state.
One of the worst features of thu
situation here, according to County
Aent Holt, is that due tc inefficient
marketing methods the farmers hav
rot been able to place their crop:
with the result that the local markets
were flooded, while middle western
and eastern markets werf. short. I
is to remedy this condition that action
toward the formation of a cooperativ-3
association has been taken. The sc.
curing of a wider market for distri
bution and the standardisation of pro
duce are its ultimate aims
The body of Answell L. Parker was
recovered from the Willamette river
Monday afternoon at about 2 o'clock,
a "short distance from where th J
young man was drowned, which was
sear the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. E
Oriteser, about two miles from Ore
iron City.
Much difficulty was had in grap
pling for the body, since Parker was
attired in a bathing suit when
drowned. Since the young man was
drowned Friday afternoon blastin?
and grappling have been resorted to
to secure the body The services of
Hugh llrady; Portland's grappler, were
secured this afternoon, pnd shortly
after his arrival the body made its ap
pearance ci the surface. It-is thought
by some tiat as the paper mills are
closed on Sunday causes the water to
rise, and it is the opinion of some that
tiia high waters caused the body to
become dislodged and come to the
surfaf-e
The body was removed to the un
dertaking parlors of Holman & Pace,
where it is being prepared for burial
and shipment to Eugene Tuesday
morning. From that city it will be
taken to pleasant hill, w here funeral
services will be held Wednesday, with
.'nterment in the family lot of Pleas
mt Hili cemetery.
W. II. Parker, father of the youn?

for the remains." William Cruzon,
uncle of Ansell Parker, wLo?e home is

several days gning his assistance.
Parker lost his life while .bathing
near Pulp Station. was hanging
on the rear end of a rowboat swim

ifter loosening his hold, took several
strokes, then called to his companions
for help. Just as his companions, H.
Holliiugsvorth and W. Bullard, start
ed towards Parker he sank, never to
appear agin. He was considered a
fair swimmer, and his friends believe
that he was caught in an undercur
rent, and he was unable to help him
self. The young men made every ef
fort to recover the body at that time.
Parker came to Oregon City from
Springfield, Oregon, last September,
and since that time has been employ
ed in the Crown Willamette Paper
Company's plant at West Linn. The
department in which he worked clos

advantage of the holiday to go in
bathing. He was about 21 years of age,
and had made many friendt while
here, making his headquarters at the
Electric hotel annex.
