tion at Cottrell and also came to
church in Sandy in the evening.
'Mr. and Mrs. Jim Russell who came
in from Hood River Saturday "evening
where Mr. Russell has been with an
engineering crew attended the big
dance and carried off the prize honors
for the most graceful couple on the
floor. The prize was two fifty each
but Mrs. Russell kept the five! The
Russela went to McMinnville from
Sandy.
The report of the Rebekah conven
tion here will appear in next week's
issue A special meetin? was held
Tuesday night by the Sandy lodge.
Jimmie Wofle has gone to Eastern
Oregon, where he expects employment
on a ranch.
Mrs. John Sladke gave a neighbor
hood dancing party last Saturday
night at her Brightwood home.
Jack Greenwood was down again
Saturday right from Rhododendron.
Mr. Greenwood is .always so cheery
folks are glad to see him drop down
from the mountains.
Mr. and Mrst Joseph Rupprelh of
Portland have rented the Bv.rber place
and took posession the first of last
week. Mr. Barber was out from the
city to initiate his tennants and hoped
to do some work himself but the rain
prevented so he returned tc Portland.
Saturday, April 23, there was a mix
tne c snow and rain most of the day
at Firwood and in the evening the
v game composition was distributed
heer, but the merry dancers didn't
mind, they came anyway. A certain
"wag" wondered how many would
turn out to a village "prayer meeting"'
on- such a night from the country
round! After all it's the desire that
makes the effort easy whether 'tis
December or July weather.

road and Mr. Shepherd broke his
wrist trying to crank his auto. Alfrel
Hoyt who happened to be a "week
ender" also, lent first aid.
George Malar has returned to Can
ada where he hopes to sell his wheat
farm and come back to Portland to
live.
Anton Malar Sr., is still taking long
automobile rides around the scenic
parts of Portland and is happy and
feeling well according to his daughter,
Mrs. Marie Farnham proprietor of the
Clyde hotel and is enjoying her
father's visit greatly.
W. S. Strack made a business trip
to Hillsboro during the past week.
Mr. Sneed, the mountain passenger
' and truck man passed through town
Saturday headed for "up above."
And now "Zeke" Beers has "Fords"
the country round, and Ernest Harris
drives "Beattie" -about in a Maxwell.
Two cars in one' houshold is doing:

Miss Alice Goldsmith returned to
Hillsboro Saturday after almost a
weeks visit with the W. F. Strack
family. Miss Goldsmith is a former
schoolmate of Mr. Strack and is out
from the east for a visit in Oregon,
and Oregon is making a good impres
sion on this easterner regardless of
rain! '-"
The Scales truck has started mak
ing regular trips up to Zig Zag with
supplies.
R. C. Clifford of Portland passed
through on his way to take up his
work at the ranger station at Zig Zag
recently.
Oscar Dooley has taken over the
ranger 'station at the Little Sandy.
Price, our hotel man went to "town''
the other day on business. Mr. Price
ays his family will arrive soon after
school closes at The Dalles. He will
have a son- and daughter in our high
' school next year and a little girl in
the grade school.
George "Wolf had a backset after he

the time since getting back to The
Dalles. Too much' walking while in
Sandy was the cause.
Mrs. E. J. Strack. and little John
went to Portland Monday remaining
till Wednesday evening. They went
to shows, visited the Hensley family
attended to errands and had a good
time but Mrs. Strack loves the Sandy
country better than the city life.
Joe Lilly has fixed up a bachelor
camp over at Deep Creek since the
new rock crushed is ready for action.
Joe says he can stand his own cook
ing which speaks well for him. "Toa
expensive to drive so far over roads
like this weather makes."
V-.fllliam Fisher of Firwood is a
lucky farmer for he has all of his
grain crop in and his potatoes planted.
Fred Wencell was in town from
Linnton a few days ago and said tho
Wencell and. Keiscker mill would like
Shut down the first of the month
and the cook house would close, jbut
the planing crew would be kept at
work for awhile.
It has been so rainy the past week
that the 'county caterpillar could not
crawl, so Zeke Beers and Carl Lound
ree came home to stir up acquaint
ance with the home folks again!
J. C- Duke tells a most interesting
'story' about his ten hens, claiming
he gets twelve eggs from them every
day.
Evans, the strawberry man at Dover
has put out five acres of pins during
the winter and is not through setting.
C. C. Pilgrim has acreage in logan
berries and strawberries in the neigh
borhood and expects to market logans
in juice this summer, mostly at the
beach where Mr. Pilgrim owns pro
perty and looks after business inter
ests during the summer season.
W. Baltimore of Southern Clacka
mas has been working at the Strack
mill the past week and may decide to
work there all summer.
C. L. Hensen passed through town
again last week. Hensen is having
some comfort stations put in at Still
Creek and is considering plans for a
water system which may possibly be
installed. More leases are being sign
ed up. from time to time for lots by
persons desiring summer homes in the
vicinity of Rhododendren.
SANDY SCHOOL NOTES.
SANDY, April 26. Miss Bess Bar
ton was an all day guest of the A. K.
Collier home last Sunday.
Mrs. Lillian Ten Eyck went to Port
land again last Saturday, she had to
go, stormy as it was.
Little Catherine Allen went to the
city with her Aunt Lizzie, remaining
over night to visit with her father,
and returning Saturday.
The six weeks tests were on last
week and this which i3 always a "try
ing" time for teachers and pupils.
Sweet graduates cannot help feel a
little anxiety over the weather and
wonder if flannels will be in order for
commencement instead of dainty,
fluffy things!
Attilio Cereghino finds walking so
far to school through the mud a little
hard as two continuous years' in the
trenches gave him a touch of rheuma
tism in his legs, ' but he is delighted
with the progress he is making in
learning English and with the continu
ed respectful treatment of the Sandy
pupils.
Five dollars and five hours were
alloted to Cora Ten Eyck, TJ. of O
freshman with which to prepare five
luncheons in the home economics
class one day last week, and Cora
met all the requirements, but of
course she would! Mrs. Lillian Tingle
was one of the luncheon guests. Cora
is also on the honor list for grades.
Marguerite, Mildred and Ruth Bar
nett have been housed up with a light
attack of mumps for the past two
weeks and they have all been missed
at school and Sunday school.
Lucile Dodson is getting started in
her school work at Seattle where she
went ten days ago with her aunt.
The school children will be especia.
ly busy from now on to make their
grades and take "part in the various
closing exercises for the year.
The bigh school dismissed in a body
to attend the trial last week which
was a new and interesting experience
for the pupils.
