An Old Song Its an old song, but like many other old songs, its worth singing over and over again. The Enterprise has sung it before, and proposes to keep on singing it until it is in the mouths of everybody. The song to which we refer is the maintenance of roads. Last summer we published editorially an extended reference to the plan adopted by Tillamook county in preserving its macadam roads from going to pieces. We simply told the facts, and related how Tillamook, at an expenditure of a few thousand dollars, went over its macadam highways once or twice each year with two men, a caterpillar tractor, a scarfier and a grader, mak ing its roads smooth and pleasnt to travel over, without the expenditure of a cent for material. Only last week we witnessed the same thing in Benton county between Albany and Corvallis, where an old macadam road is perfectly maintained. The road mileage of Clackamas exceeds that of either Benton or Tillamook. We have scores, if not hundreds of miles of macadam that were good roads when they were made, and, notwithstanding the spend ing of more than two million dollars in seven years, most of these roads have been let alone, to the disgust of the traveling public and the sorrow of the taxpayer who has been so liberal in has attitude towards highway improvement. Many of these roads come to the very doors of the cities and towns of our county. Let us approach this matter in an intelligent way. It cannot be denied that it is wasteful to build good roads and fail to maintain them, when they can be saved at a minimum cost and preserved for the future. Our present lack of vision means that the surface is scatter ed to the four winds of heaven and that the roads will ultimately have to be rebuilt. Money spent on roads is money well spent, but every dollar should be carefully conserved. BARGE IS LOST AND MANY SHIPS SEARCH IN VAIN ASTORIA. Or., Nov. 27.
