gressional foreign affairs committees
Wednesdsy night that the Irish ques
tion was a matter between Ireland
and England and that Ireland would
have no volte In the peace conference
at present. (
A statement to this effect, madu by

hood." Mr. Tumulty refused to discuss
what the pesldent did say about the
Irish question.

Jersey sale at the stock furm of C. H.
Doyle. Fifty head were sold, and Mr.
Deliok purchased two of the most vul
tiulile gilts of the Duroc breed. He Is
contemplating showing them at the
coming fulrs to be held In the fall, lie
won most of the prizes on bis herd
at tho Clackamas county fair last fall.
Mr. Deliok says the weather was
most delightful while he was at The
Dalles, with the sun shining and he
was much Impressed with the climate,
but prefers tho here for farming.
He went to Harlow Friday morning
to attend a horse sule.

OF ALASKA IS
HERE ON VISIT
George Dedman, who wae a school
teacher In Clackamas county a num
ber of years ago, and now a hotel
man of Skagway, Alaska, was In Ore
gon City Saturday, where fie was vis
iting his old-time friends. Mr. Dedman
is visiting his brother, K. P. Dedman,
ex-county recorder of Clackamas,' and
la also a guest at the home of J. C.
Paddock of Gladstone. Before return
ing to Alaska he will visit his broth,
er, Dr. If. A. Dedman of Cunliy. Mr.
Dedman owns a 60 room hotel at
Skagway, and for the convenience of
the tourists In that place he has erect
ed seven cottages, all of which are
furnished, and have been found to be
very popular. There are many scenic
spots to visit In that section, and
among them are the glaciers, where
hundreds of visitors hike each year.
Mr. Dedman. while en route to Oregon
City, visited his daughter, Mrs. Geof
frey of Victoria, B. C.

Knox of Pennsylvania, ex-secretary of
the senate, assailed the league of no
tions as striking down American con
stitutional principles, and proposed
a new world organization which he
said "would preserve the Monroe doc
trine and save America from the re
sults of European Intrigue and ag
gression."
8enator Knox, who attended the
White House dinner conference last
Wednesday, said the constitution of
the league as presented to the peace
conference "sanctions, breeds and
commands war."

STOCKHOLM, March 1. The Lith
uanians have refused the request of
the Holshevlkl for an armistice, it was
stated in an official dispatch from
Kovno today.
The HoHhevikt were said to have
asked for cessation of hostilities fol
lowing an advance of more than 13
miles from Vllna by the Lithuanians
In which several towns were taken.
The Lithuanians' commander refused,
demanding Immediate retirement of
the enemy from Lithuania.

PROMINENT RESIDENT DIES
Mrs. A. Gofdsmlth, prominent resi
dent of Oregon City, passed away sud
denly at her home here, Wednesday
evening after an illness of some dura
tion. Mra Goldsmith had been 111 for
some time, but her death was a shock
to hor family and many friends of
this city.
