Kviiii It a man cuunot fight there
I stilt plenty of opportunity for
him to do "his bit" for his country
Nln France. The work of obtaining a
sufficient quantity of timber for the
western front Is a very big one and
employs a large number of men, The
timber Is used for a great, many pur
pose in the trenches, for making
bridge parts and sides and roofs of
dugouts, roads bridges etc., etc
At the commencement of the war
a great many of the finest forests In
northwestern France were entirely
cut down to supply the armies with
timber. Since then the IirltlHh and j
French have had to go farther and
farther alkld until now the forestry
units are working all over France
and all over Great DrlUiln. Even the
tree In the famous old Windsor for
est have been cut down.
These forestry units consist en
tirely of men who have been ac
customed to forestry wrok and they
get very little military training. , In
fact, they are working on linos of
employment to the similar Canadian
lumber camps. Men from IS to G6
year are taken by the British and
Canadlun armies and the same
standard of physical fitness Is not re
quired for these units. It practically
means that any man who Is fit to work
at his Job Is taken. This provides an
opportunity for men who are over age
or are not fit enough to go overseas to
fight ,to engage In forestry work In
France. If a man can handle an axe
or a saw or has any knowledge of the
work he will be taken.
The British and Canadlun recruiting
mission has recruiting offices In many
cities all over the United States, and
men who desire to enlist in the fores
try units can do so by applying at the
nearest one.
