WASHINGTON. Sept. V- lairk
spur poisoning has been found, lu an
exhaustive study conducted by the
I'nlted State department of agricul
ture, to be, with the exception of loco
iMiisouiiig, the greatest cause of loss lu
western cattle herds. Losses, It Is
aaid, are reported from all the moun
tain regions between Mexico and Can
uda and the Rocky mountains on the
eust to the west.
The recent exn-iiiiicnts conducted
by the depart lit. a report of w hlcli
j Is published In Plofesiilonal Paper No.
.".i'ij. Indicate that the various species
of larkspurs are poisonous to cattle
and horses, but not to sheep. Except
under unusual circumstances, however,
iiorses do not eat enough of tho plant
to produce any III effects. From a
practical standpoint, therefore, It may
be s.tld th.it larkspur ufficts (little
i nly. It was also found that a (inuti
lity of the weed orpial to at b ast It per
cent of the weight of the anlinal was
neccBKiiry lo produce poisoning.
In tho oplnh n of ti e Investigators
the fact that sheep may ho apparent
ly ublo to feed upon laikamirs with
entire Impunity may bo utilized In
some case:i to protect the cultln.
Where larkspur Is (specially abund
ant, the paper iilrea ly mentioned says
It is desirable to use thn langu for
sheep rather than Tor cattle or to com
bine cheep gra.lm; and cattle grazing
in such a manner that tin' ureas In
fested with larkspur rhnll be first
oaten down by tho nheep. On com
paratively limited nrei'S It may ho pos
sible to dig up the lull larkspur, but
this In frequently too (ostly a meas
ure to bo adopted and, furthermore,
It Is rarely possible to eradicate com
pletely the polf.onous weed.
Generally speaking, there are two
ureal groups of InrkHpurs, thn tall and
the low. The low duiappeiir from the
range early In July and canes of pois
oning from tliem are mmally confined
ti the months of M-iy and June. Tho
tall larkspurs llvo through the Hum
mer season, making their first appear
ance In early spring. Thin Is the
time in which they are the most pois
onous. After blossoming, their pols
nous character appears to diminish.
Ultimately, It disappears and Ihe
plant dries up although tin.' needs re
main poisonous. In Coloredo. most of
the cases of poisoning from the tall
larkspur occur in May and June, Willi
nporadlc cases In July. In oilier local
ities, however, the lailiapurs blonsoni
later and poisoning i;i: y occur as late
hk August or even September.
On the rawre Ihe lirst evldem e that
the animal has been poisoned Is ire-
quently afforded by Its falling down.
After a short Interval it will proliabiy
regain Us feet only lo fall again. As
the effect of the poison werrs oil, tin;
iinlinal Is able to keep itu feet for
longer and longer periods, and llnally
walks off very much as If nothing had
happened. In severer cases It Is ultl
Miitcly unable to regain its feet at all
ami dlos. Government experiments
indicate that l.cneflcbil results may be
obtained by treating the poisoned aul
miilw with hypodermic Injections of
physostlKmin salicylate, pllocarpin
liydrnchlorld, and strychnin sulphate.
If necessary, these Irc itments may he
followed by hypodermic Injections of
whiskey. '
