SIX CONVICTS ESCAPE.
SALEM, Ore., Aug. Six convicts,
employed as cooks ut the prison camp
nine miles northeast of Salem on th;
Silverton road, where 100 convicts
have been engaged in pulling flax, es
caped early yesterday. The men were
trusties. Their absence was discov
ered by guards shortly after daybreak.
Armed posses are pursuing the fugi
tives, who are believed to have headed
toward the hills.
Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul rail
road lets contract for 1.100 boxcars
requiring 5,000 feet of Douglas fir at
the cost of over 1,000,000.
