SHORN SHEEP BEGIN
The receipts for the week at the
Portland Union Stock Yards Co. have
been: Cattle 1C57, calves 31, hogs
1172, sheep 3340.
Notwithstanding comparatively heavy
runs of cattle the last few weeks the
market has been slightly lower to
steady, choice steers still selling $7.50
to $7.75 with other grades at the usual
differential.
Demand for hogs seems to overrun
the light supply of only fair grade of
offerings. A few very good loads
touched the $7.65 spot Monday. Out
look steady.
Sshorn sheep are beginning to come
to market and although not strictly fat
are commanding very good prices. Spe
cial spring lambs are lower while oth
er choice lambs are steady at $8.75 to
$9.25, for full wools. Shearling $1.25
less. Other sheep steady.

SAYS CHICAGO HEARING
IS ENDED.
CHIOAGO, April 16. The Chicago
hearing of the United States commis
sion on Industrial relations, begun two
weeks ago, was concluded today with
a flitting glance at working conditions
and wages in local packing houses.
The chief witness was J. Ogden Ar
mour, president of Armour & Co.,
The essential part of hla testimony
bearing on repeated testimony of oth
ers that organization is the remedy
through which worklngmen may attain
their rights, was to the effectjthat he
was opposed to the unionization of bis
employes. He cited the strike of 1901,
when the offer of the packers to arbi
trate was declined, he said. The union
be declared, was crushed, and since
then organizers had been discouraged.
